Water level in Yamuna receding
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, June 20
The water level in the Yamuna today started receding and was recorded at 206.50 m at 5 pm, said officials in the Delhi Government.

Owing to very large and unprecedented release of water from Hathnikund Barrage by Haryana, a record level of the Yamuna was reached yesterday. More than 10,000 flood victims have been evacuated from the low-lying areas and are camping in around 1,153 tents set up at different locations.

As the flood waters has started receding, there may be increased likelihood of spread of water-borne diseases like cholera, dysentery, etc., and sharp rise in of breeding of mosquitoes, which may further lead to diseases like malaria, dengue, etc.

The Revenue Secretary, Dharam Pal, today chaired a high-level meeting which was attended by the Principal Secretary (Health), SCL Das, commissioners of three municipal corporations and heads of health and sanitation wings.

The issue of minimizing apprehensions of outbreak of disease in the camp was discussed in length like typhoid and cholera and air-borne diseases like chickenguinea, malaria and dengue. "It was decided that anti-malaria spray would be undertaken in the camps, fumigation against mosquitoes once in a day and chlorine bottles would be provided to flood affected families to store drinking water and to keep it safe for drinking," said a senior official in the Delhi Government.

In order to eliminate larvae around camps suitable spray would be undertaken. The health department and the three civic agencies have been directed to maintain cleanliness and sanitation around camps to avoid any health hazard. They have been told to bring awareness about precautions and make arrangements to distribute pamphlets stating do's and don't's so that outbreak of any disease could be stopped.
