Bus conductor’s misconduct triggers protest at Nawanshahr

Nawanshahr, December 31
Employees of the local Punjab Roadways Depot blocked the traffic and raised slogans at Ambedkar Chowk to protest against the alleged manhandling of a conductor, Amrik Singh, by the staff of a private bus at the Ropar bus stand here today.

Punjab Conductors Union president Surinder Singh Soeta said employees of private bus operators having political clout had been exhibiting high-handedness with his collegues while stopping passengers from boarding Punjab Roadways buses at bus stands.

"Today, when a bus of Punjab Roadways Depot, Nawanshahr, coming from Chandigarh reached the Ropar bus stand, a private bus coming from Mohali stopped right next to it, virtually hindering passengers to get into the Punjab Roadways bus. When the bus conductor, Amrik Singh, objected to it, the conductor of the private bus and his associates manhandled him," said Soeta, adding that the victim conductor informed his colleagues at Nawanshahr, who gathered at the chowk to confront the other party.

They managed to overpower one of them even as the driver of the private bus succeeded in taking away the vehicle by accelerating the speed. Later, other Punjab Roadways employees gathered at the chowk and blocked the traffic to demand strict action against the errant staff of the private bus.

It was only after SHO City Purshottam Lal intervened that the blockade was cleared by the protesting employees. He called the concerned staff members of the private bus from Banga to the City Police Station here and settled the issue. The errant conductor of the private bus, Kuldip Singh, apologized in writing for his conduct. The police warned him of stern action in case such misconduct was repeated.
