Jalandhar, September 28
The Punjab Technical University during its 40th academic council meeting held Thursday proposed to provide necessary infrastructural support for starting specialised courses in at least six engineering colleges from next session onwards.

In a meeting chaired by Vice Chancellor Dr Rajneesh Arora, it was decided that laboratories for specialised courses be set up in different colleges. An MTech course on material technology is being planned for the Punjab Institute of Technology at Kapurthala and electrical engineering with specialisation in air conditioning is being planned in Amritsar College of Engineering.

Specialised laboratory on the similar lines has already been developed in mechatronics at Baba Banda Singh Bahadur College Fatehgarh Sahib. The VC said more such advanced courses were being planned for Giani Zail Singh Engineering College, Bathinda; CGC Landran and Guru Nanak Dev Engineering College, Ludhiana. The VC has asked the colleges to send across their proposals and has agreed to help them by putting in 75 per cent of expenditure required for setting up new gadgets and equipment for the purpose.

He said preference would be given to those colleges who would have NAAC accreditation. The university also proposed that the students with compartments also be allowed upgradation to other streams within colleges in the third semester in case there are any vacant seats to which the change is desired. The council also cleared a proposal to reduce the fee levied from students seeking admission in BCom professional from Rs 7,700 to Rs 6,700 for distance education and for MCom professional from Rs 8,700 to Rs 7,700. The university also offered the colleges to start a new course in Bachelor in khadi production and design as proposed by the deputy director technical education and industrial training on the recommendation of Khadi and Village Development Commission. The university is also planning to start the course in its newly started PIT Bathinda which offers a course in textile technology.

Chander Mohan not to be with PTU-BOG

Perhaps having realised that Swraj Mazda tractor inventor Chander Mohan, who has already been with PTU’s BOG, could not continue for the fourth tenure as its chairman, the Punjab government has decided to replace him with some other technocrat. SS Channy, principal secretary, technical education, confirmed it saying, “Someone else’s name will now be proposed.” Mohan has already been on the PTU’s board for three tenures even though as per the PTU Act, a board member cannot serve for more than two tenures.
