5-year-old raped, 2 held
Chandigarh, September 28
The accused in police custody in Chandigarh on Friday. In a gruesome incident, a five-year-old girl of Colony Number 4 was raped by two youths. Her rectum and anus were torn apart. Her moth and eyes were covered with mud when she was found crying near the railway tracks.

MC officials proceed on mass leave
Chandigarh, September 28
Demanding repatriation to their parent states, 18 officials of the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation, who are on deputation from Punjab and Haryana, have decided to go on a mass leave.

Drive against eve-teasing draws good response

The campaign against eve-teasing initiated by the Chandigarh Police has started drawing response with girls coming forward and reporting the incidents to the police.

Notice of motion to Punjab, Haryana, UT
Chandigarh, September 28
Claiming that the police and the administration were not serious in dealing with eve-teasing and the menace was attaining the proportions of an ‘epidemic’, a Zirakpur resident today moved the Punjab and Haryana High Court seeking initiation of ‘positive steps’ to ensure the safety of women and girl students.

Services of ‘eve-teaser’ Home Guards volunteer terminated
Chandigarh, September 28
Sending a strong message, the Chandigarh Police today terminated the services of a Home Guards volunteer against whom a complaint of eve-teasing was made by one of the students of the Postgraduate Government College for Girls, Sector 11, during an interaction with the UT SSP on Thursday.

Panchkula in grip of dengue fever
Panchkula, September 28
Nine confirmed cases of dengue fever and 25 suspected cases of swine flu were reported in the town in the past one week. "Cases of dengue fever surface in August, September and October. Most of the patients suffering from these diseases are children as they have less immunity," said a senior doctor at General Hospital.

Sandeep enters senate with maximum votes
Chandigarh, September 28
Counting of votes polled during the Senate elections in progress at Panjab University in Chandigarh on Friday. After much delay, the result for three out of the 15 seats of the Panjab University Senate under the graduates constituency was declared today. Sandeep Kumar, District Education Officer of Fazilka, emerged as a winner with maximum number of votes polled for him.

Training in e-governance
Chandigarh, September 28
A two-day training programme on e-Governance for the UT officials concluded at a SPIC centre here today. Organised under the National e-Governance Plan, the session was first in a series of activities planned to sensitise various departments about the benefits of information and communication technology (ICT) in ensuring transparency, and timely and hassle-free delivery of services to the citizens.

Over 200 to participate in Walkathon

Over 200 faculty members, resident doctors, nurses and staff of the PGI will be participating in a Walkathon to be organised by the School of Public Health in collaboration with the National Institute of Nursing Education to mark World Heart Day on September 29.

Know about city through mobile application
Chandigarh, September 28
UT Adviser KK Sharma today launched Chandigarh City Guide, an application for smartphones and tabs. As per the UT officials, this is the first mobile application in the Northern region developed by the Administration or any government department. The launch of mobile application is a part of the Tourism Week celebrations in Chandigarh.

Chandigarh Haat begins at Sector 34
Chandigarh Haat was inaugurated amidst much fanfare at the Sector-34 Exhibition Ground on Friday. The shoppers were welcomed to the venue by a 200-feet-long dragon and a 70-feet-high statue of fictional comic character Saboo. A group of 50 underprivileged children from Zulfikaar Khan’s theatre group were the first visitors to the haat. They visited craft bazaar, food plaza and amusement park.

Dr Gurmohan Singh Walia, acting Vice-Chancellor of Sri Guru Granth Sahib World University, recently honoured 88-year-old Davinder Pal Singh, a retired revenue official, for translating the holy book Sri Guru Granth Sahib into Urdu.

Mega lok adalats to be held from Dec 1
Fatehgarh Sahib,September 28
Two mega lok adalats will be organised at the District Courts Complex, Fatehgarh Sahib, and Judicial Court, Amloh, on Dec 1, 2012. The decision was taken at a meeting of the District Free Legal Aid Authority, which was held under the chairmanship of GS Gill, District and Session Judge, today. GS Gill said cases related to civil, criminal, bank loans, matrimonial disputes and accidental claims would be heard and settled amicably. He urged litigants to take the benefits of the lok adalats.

Youth murdered, body found after 10 days
Banur, September 28
An unidentified body was found near Banur today. The police has started investigation and registered a murder case against an unidentified person. The body of the victim had been kept for identification in the Civil Hospital, Rajpura. So far nobody has claimed the body.

The body of the youth, who drowned in Norangrai Sarovar at Ambala City on the occasion of Vamandwadshi Mela two days ago, was recovered from the pond today. The deceased was identified as Ranjeet, a resident of Barabanki. A passer-by found the body floating and informed the police.

Miffed over the poor condition of buses used for ferrying schoolchildren, the Punjab and Haryana High Court today asked the Chandigarh Administration to explain the method adopted by it to inspect such vehicles.

Man booked for making advances to woman
Chandigarh, September 28
The police has booked Jasbir Singh, a resident of Sector 46, for outraging the modesty of a woman near Bittu Car Zone in Sector 7. DSP Vijay Kumar said the accused, who is a car dealer, tried to outrage the modesty of the 22-year-old woman working with an NGO. A case has been registered against the accused.

Engineer held for taking bribe

A team of Patiala vigilance has arrested a junior engineer (JE) of the Kharar Electricity Department while he was accepting bribe of Rs 20,000 from a resident of Mohali today.

 47 teams selected for football tourney
Chandigarh, September 28
A total of 47 teams will vie for the top slot during the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) Cluster XIII Football Tournament to be held from October 3. The cluster includes teams from Chandigarh and states of Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, and Punjab. The matches will be played on a knock-out basis.
