Marriage palaces told to submit documents
Jalandhar, September 14 A special district committee formed for the purpose also plans to give a personal hearing and scrutiny of original documents to all palace owners before categorising these commercial establishments as authorised or unauthorised. For the same, the JDA has prepared a schedule for each district. Palace owners of Jalandhar have been called on October 3, those in Hoshiarpur on October 5 and in Kapurthala on October 8. The prompt action on the part of the officials follows an order of the Punjab and Haryana High Court under CWP 21547 of 2011 titled Jagjit Singh v/s State of Punjab and others. On the orders of the court, the Department of Housing and Urban Development has asked each development authority to constitute a district-level committee under the Chief Administrator. In Jalandhar, the charge of CA is with Deputy Commissioner Priyank Bharti. The various documents demanded by the JDA include those on date of establishment of marriage palace, approvals sought from various departments including PowerComm etc, building plans, NOCs required as per bylaws. No marriage palace shall be allowed directly abutting national, state highways and major district roads except having access through a service road to ensure that there is no hindrance to smooth flow of traffic
n Marriage palaces should be at least 500 sq yards away from schools, colleges, religious places and hospitals
n The owner has to take licence for the purpose under the provision of Punjab Municipal Act 1976 which can be cancelled in view of changed circumstances like increased traffic volume/ parking problem/ environmental problem/ or problem to general public.
n Licence can also be cancelled for not lifting garbage properly, fire safety etc
n Basement may be used as banquet hall but shall have minimum two staircases for entry and exit or two ramps or one staircase and one ramp.
n Permissible noise level as prescribed by Punjab Pollution Control Board to be ensured
n Cooking place be segregated from main building
n Minimum four emergency batteries required at exit points. Line of travel to exit point not to be more than 10 metres from any point of building. There has to be an additional door for every 100 persons.
n Door width not to be less than 1.5 metres
n Own source of water supply
n Fixed fire equipments including automatic water sprinklers, fire detectors, fire alarm system, wet risers, fire hydrants etc
n Fire resistant material for doors, windows, false ceiling, decoration material and fixtures
n Barrier free access for disabled and elderly persons |

Inter-state gang of auto thieves unearthed; three held
Kapurthala, September 14 Acting on a tip-off, the Sadar police laid a naka at Sandal village and intercepted a Verna car on which three persons were sitting, said Deputy Superintendent of Police Paramjit Singh. When the police asked for the documents, car occupants - Amarjit Singh, Sanjay Chauhan and Manoj Kumar, alias Bubby - got nervous and tried to escape from the scene. The police got suspicious and while frisking the car occupants it recovered a revolver and 45 cartridges and Rs 50,000 cash from Manoj Kumar. During verification, the documents were also found fake, the DSP said. During questioning, the trio revealed that they had been active in this trade for the past over three years. They had been lifting vehicles from Delhi and selling them in this part of the region after preparing fake documents. The trio had also roped in Vishnu Babbar, Narayan, alias Sonu, Neeraj, Bharat, alias Sonu, and Rajiv Sachdeva, all from Kapurthala, in their gang. They also admitted to have sold over 35 such vehicles in the past over three years. On their identification, the police has also recovered a Santro and a Zen car today. After impounding the vehicles, the police has registered a case under Sections 420, 379, 467, 468, 471 and 120-B of the IPC against the eight members of the gang at Sadar police station. A hunt had also been launched to nab the absconders and raids were being conducted at their suspected hideouts, the DSP added. |

Rs 8-crore grant for Nawanshahr
Nawanshahr, September 14 He was presiding over the first meeting of the committee during the current financial year. Besides, grants amounting to Rs 6.27 crore spent earlier were also approved at the meeting. Thiara, while exhorting officials of different departments to ensure transparency in the utilisation of grants, asked Sewerage Board officials to prepare estimates for providing sewerage and drinking water facilities to the residents of outer colonies. Darshan Lal Mangupur, chairman, Zila Parishad, Deputy Commissioner, Tanu M. Kashayap, ADC, Amarjit Paul, among others also addressed the meeting. — OC

UK official meets industrialists
Jalandhar, September 14 “India is already a strategic business partner for the UK. We think the UK and Punjab can work together in various sectors. The UK is interested to take its business ties with Punjab to the next level,” she said. The UK and India already have stronger business ties. The bilateral trade of both the countries had crossed the 16.9-billion pounds mark during last year. She held a series of meeting with businessmen and senior officials, including Jalandhar Deputy Commissioner Priyank Bharti, during her maiden visit to Punjab. “We are going to train Indian youths in different fields particularly, the retail marketing and English language. Since, India is a strategic business partner for the UK, we are working for doubling the quantum of trade with India by the year 2015,” said Hooper while talking to The Tribune. She said the Trade and Investment wing of the British High Commission was running a free service for assisting Indian businessmen in establishing trade links in the UK. |

Jalandhar, September 14 Veteran Akali leader Kuldip Singh Wadala said he and his sanstha would convert the demand into a mass movement. “During his visit to Tarn Taran in 2004, Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh had assured the Sikhs that the corridor would be set up to facilitate pilgrims, willing to visit Gurudwara Kartarpur Sahib. But, the Sikhs are still awaiting the corridor. The shrine holds a lot of importance for Sikhs as Guru Nanak had spent the last 18 years of his life at the place,” said Kuldip Singh Wadala, who is the head of Kartarpur Sahib Ravi Darshan Abhilashi Sanstha. — TNS |
