Student hurt as ceiling fan gives way
Ludhiana, September 14
Injured student Daman and his father Shiv Charan show the hospital record in Ludhiana on Friday. A 13-year-old student of Class VII, Daman, was injured when a ceiling fan gave way and fell on his head inside a classroom at New Senior Secondary School, Sarabha Nagar, here this morning.

12 auto-rickshaws impounded
Ludhiana, September 14
As many as 12 auto-rickshaws were impounded while 19 others were challaned by the traffic police on the first day of drive against overloaded school autorickshaws here today. The police impounded the auto-rickshaws after the drivers failed to produce the documents.

Shoe manufacturers observe strike
Ludhiana, September 14
The Akalgarh market wears a deserted look on Friday. Shoe manufacturers across the state today observed a strike against the increase in VAT. Irked by the hike in VAT, shoe wholesalers and retailers suspended work and burnt an "effigy of VAT" at Clock Tower and later submitted a memorandum to the Deputy Commissioner.

0001 vehicle number goes for Rs 5.1 lakh
Ludhiana, September 14
Residents' craze for getting fancy numbers for their vehicles refuses to die down. During an auction of fancy numbers by the District Transport Department at Bachat Bhawan today, the 0001 number was bagged by a resident for Rs 5.10 lakh. The auction was conducted for 270 numbers for the PB 10 DE and DF series.

3 held with heroin worth Rs 30 lakh
Ludhiana, September 14
The police seized 60 gm of heroin worth Rs 30 lakh and currency notes amounting to Rs 4 lakh from three drug peddlers last evening. The police arrested Naseem Shafi, a hardcore drug peddler and resident of Ahluwalia Colony, Jamalpur, and two of his accomplices, Jagtar Singh, a resident of Serai Amanat Khan in Tarn Taran district, and Mandeep Singh, alias Deepu, a resident of the Tibba road.

Railway pensioners want better medical facilities
Ludhiana, September 14
Members of the Northern Railway Pensioners Welfare Association said today although the erstwhile railway health unit was upgraded to a sub-divisional hospital (SDH), special medical care was not available to employees, pensioners and their families.

Shahi Imam of Punjab Maulana Habib-ur-Rahman, while addressing a press conference, demanded a ban on screening of a controversial film made in US. “The blasphemous movie, showing disrespect to Prophet Hazrat Mohammed and maligning the Muslim community, is a deliberate attempt to provoke the followers of Islam worldwide to agitate. This mischievous act ought to be condemned by the entire civilised world,” said Shahi Imam.

Worker dies in lift mishap
Khanna, September 14
A 25-year-old factory worker died after a service lift installed in a factory unit fell on him at midnight. The victim, identified as Ravi Kumar from Bihar, was working at a box factory near Daresi area. The incident took place at 1am. The victim was rushed to a nearby hospital but he was declared brought dead by the paramedics. After recording the statement of Ravi's relatives the police today booked the factory owner under Section 304-A of the IPC under charges of death due to negligence.

Despite the ban on the sale, storage, manufacturing and distribution of gutkha, pan masala and other tobacco and nicotine containing items, sellers and consumers continue to violate the ban with impunity.

Work suspended for months
Ludhiana, September 14
The site where the work of laying tiles has been suspended on the Gill road in Ludhiana. The work of laying interlocking tiles on the Gill road has been suspended for several months for unknown reasons. Despite issuing five different notices, contractor, who is considered close to the Akali Dal, has not been able to start the work. Perturbed over this delay, the Ludhiana Municipal Corporation (MC) has now initiated the process of blacklisting the contractor.
