Gurdaspur, September 3
The new multi-storied judicial complex, which has been de-linked from the District Administrative Complex, will prove to be boon for litigants and lawyers alike as the present court complex has virtually become an eyesore for residents because of its archaic structure.

The three-storey complex, to be built at a cost of Rs 40.27 crore and to be completed by December 31, is coming up at the same site where the old court complex is located. Chambers of lawyers and court rooms would be demolished.

Once the new project was surrounded by a controversy when advocates had vehemently opposed the shifting of the old complex to some other site, but their protests were given a quiet burial in March last year when Justice Ranjit Singh, chairman of the Building Committee of the Punjab and Haryana High Court, laid the foundation stone at the same site where the old complex was located. The stone was laid in the presence of Justice Rakesh Kumar Garg, Administrative Judge, Sessions Division, Gurdaspur.

The new complex, replete with parking and other facilities, is coming up in an area of 8.58 acres right in the heart of the town.

The Gurdaspur District Bar Association (GDBA) had asked the Building Committee to allot 500 chambers to lawyers. However, much to the dismay of advocates, the Committee decided to allot them just 421 chambers.

Deputy Commissioner Dr Abhinav Trikha is overseeing the shifting process. “The complex has been de-linked from the proposed District Administrative Complex (DAC),” he added. Trikha said it had been a long-pending demand of the lawyers to get the new complex constructed at the old site because of its “connectivity and proximity to the bus stand and the railway station.”
