Shahkot, August 28
Unable to bear the continuous torture at the hands of a gurdwara granthi, who had been insisting a teacher of Daultpur Dhadda for marriage, the victim allegedly committed suicide by consuming some poisonous substance at her residence on Monday evening. The victim breathed her last at a private hospital in Lohia Khas this evening.

The deceased was identified as Ramandeep Kaur (23), a teacher at a private school in Maliwal village near here. The police had registered a case of abetment to suicide against granthi Harmanpreet Singh, who hails from Kot Bhai village near Mukatsar. He was presently living in Daultpur Dhadda village.

Interestingly, the accused had been annoying the deceased for the past several months and on July 20, when kin of the girl’s family and villagers came to know about his bad intentions, they blackened his face and also made him to wear shoe garland in full public view. Despite this, the accused was still pressing the girl for marriage, kin of the girl said.

Narrating the tale of torture by the accused, Onkar Singh, brother of the deceased, said a few months ago, his sister’s marriage was fixed to be solemnised with a man from Kapurthala and when the granthi came to know about it, he threatened the girl that he would not let her lead a happy married life. The accused, meanwhile, approached the family of the prospective boy at Kapurthala and filled their minds with hatred about the girl. Subsequently, the boy’s family discarded the marriage proposal.

“When Ramandeep came to know about it, she started living in depression,” Onkar said, adding that still the accused continued to harass his sister.

“A few days ago, Ramandeep had again apprised us of the torture by the granthi and she had threatened to kill herself,” her family members said.

“Last evening, when she was alone at home, she consumed some poisonous substance and died today,” Onkar said.

Investigating officer Arjun Singh said as per the statement of the deceased’s brother, a case was registered and efforts were on to nab the accused.

Jalandhar, August 28
The alleged corporal punishment case took a new turn with the parents of Jasmine, a Class IV student of Lord Mahavira Jain Public School at Phagwara, withdrawing the complaint against the school’s English teacher and the teacher repenting her act and saying that no such act would be repeated in future.

Jasmine’s mother Anju Walia and other family members had alleged that the child was beaten up mercilessly with a cane by the English teacher, Neha. Anju Walia had also asserted that there was no scope of compromise going by the way her daughter was treated by her teacher.

Meanwhile, the management of the school has decided to continue the inquiry into the incident. “The teacher has made it clear that she had not beaten Jasmine with a cane. She said she had made a gesture of giving a slight slap to the student and in turn Jasmine had accidently hit her lip with her arm in her bid to save herself. Anyway, we will continue with the probe into the incident as we feel that such things should not be allowed to happen anyway. The teacher has already assured the parents and the management that such an incident would not take place in future,” said Rajnish Sharma, Principal of the school.

“Both the sides have reached a compromise after Jasmine’s mother and family withdrew their complaint.

The mother of the student and the management have informed us that they have reached a compromise,” said Phagwara SP HPS Khakh.

Gurdaspur, August 28
The new state-of-the-art bus stand, which will come up in an area of five acres at a cost of Rs 6 crore at Tibri road Improvement Trust colony (scheme No 7), will be equipped with better facilities as compared to the skeletal facilities and the dilapidated infrastructure at the current bus stand located in the heart of the city.

The foundation stone of the new structure will be laid by Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal on August 31 and will take concrete shape within a year.

Sources said CCTV cameras would be installed at the bus stand.

Deputy Commissioner Dr Abhinav Trikha said expression of interest (EOI) had already been invited from private players and things would be finalised within the next 15 days.

This decision of the district administration to shift the bus stand one kilometre away from the present site has been welcomed by residents belonging to all strata of society, including students and officer goers.

The current bus stand is cramped for space. There are over 500 buses coming to the bus stand daily and all have to meander their way carefully past each other when they come in and go out of the premises.

A commuter said wrong parking of buses in different counters had made matters worse.

A lack of drinking water, no cycle and scooter stands or car parking and blatantly wrong parking of buses has added to the commuters’ woes. The premises has been rented out to a contractor by the zila parishad.
