Jalandhar, August 19
The Jalandhar (rural) police will get Ranjit Singh Kandola, alias Raja, who was arrested along with his aide Sukhjinder Singh, by the Delhi police on August 11, on production warrant.

Superintendent of Police (detective) Rajinder Singh said the rural police had already sought Ranjit Singh Kandola, alias Baljit Singh, alias Raja, on production warrant from the Delhi police. He said Raja would be brought to Jalandhar by Tuesday or Wednesday for questioning in the Rs 200-crore drug haul case.

He said Raja’s questioning might provide a lead to the police regarding his links with drug mafias operating in other countries.

Raja, a resident of Huppowal village in Nawanshahr, was wanted in the Rs 200-crore drug (ice, a high quality of heroin) haul case unearthed by the Jalandhar (rural) police in June.

The police had also arrested four gangsters of a seven-member international gang of drug peddlers and recovered over 34 kg of methamphetamine and 19 kg of ephedrine, also known as “ice” or “rave party drug”, from their possession in June.

Raja, who is the kingpin of the gang, had been eluding the police along with his aides, including two NRIs, for a long time.

Talking to The Tribune, Rajinder said over 18 persons, including three women, NRIs and local residents that were made members of the gang, had been arrested as yet and the police had also recovered ice, heroin and other high-quality drugs in a huge quantity, besides weapons from their possession.

He added that Raja was also wanted by the Nawanshahr police for his involvement in similar cases.

Even though the Superintendent of Police Rajinder Singh on Saturday, had claimed to have nearly solved the crime, nothing concrete has come to the fore yet.

The police has conducted raids at various hideouts in Gurdaspur, Hoshiarpur and other neighbouring districts and has rounded up certain suspects, sources said.

Sources disclosed that the assailants procured the SIM card of the mobile phone used on a fake identity, from Dhariwal in Gurdaspur district.

Jaimal Singh, station house officer, Maqsudan, who is also investigating the case, claimed, “We are dealing with the case on a priority basis but as of now we have nothing that we can share.”
