Coal shortage to hit thermal plants
Ambala, August 19 A special report prepared by the working group on power under the Ministry of Power says that “coal availability for upcoming thermal plants is going to be a major constraint to sustain power generation”. The report states that to operate the proposed capacity additions, the coal availability to the power sector must be increased by domestic coal companies to 688 million tonnes in the country. As per the CEA report, 31 thermal plants in the country, have less than 7 days’ coal stock, including the one at Jhajjar in Haryana. The state is already planning a 660-MW capacity addition to the super-critical thermal unit at Yamunanagar as an extension of two 300-MW units each. The state is depending upon the coal block at Mara-to-Mahan in Madhya Pradesh, which has estimated coal reserves of 956 million tonnes allocated jointly to HPGCL and the Delhi Government. The other project hit by the coal constrains is the Indira Gandhi Super Thermal Power Project at Jhajjar, which has three 500-MW units each. This project was to get a coal linkage of 6.94 million tonnes per annum which was allocated from Mahanadi Coalfields Ltd. However, the coal supply has not been forthcoming to run the units here. The state had a 750 MW share in this project. The 1320-MW Mahatma Gandhi Thermal Power Project in Jhajjar Case-II had a coal linkage of 5.21 million tonnes per annum from Central Coalfields Limited (CCL). But this project has met the same fate as the coal shortage has been preventing HPGCL from running the units to their full capacity. Here, the China Light and Power Company plans to add a 660-MW unit. The shortage of coal is to be met through imports. In order to bridge the demand-supply gap, the power utilities are expected to import around 159 million tonnes (MT) of coal. This quantity of imported coal would be in addition to 54 MT likely to be imported by thermal power stations designed on imported coal. Therefore, the total quantity of coal to be imported is about 213 MT.

Inclusion of Jats as OBCs opposed
Karnal, August 19 Gramin Bharat president Ved Prakash Vidrohi today urged Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda and other Jat leaders not to exert any pressure on the Haryana backward classes commission to include
the Jats in the backward classes list. “The way Jat Arakshan Samiti leaders are
threatening the Backward Classes Commission to include Jats in the OBC list is unconstitutional
and its is an attempt to take undue advantage of their numerical strength as well as political
power,” he said. Virodhi said it was intriguing that the Chief Minister was
giving assurances to the Jat leaders about the inclusion of their community in the OBC
list and working like the leader of a particular caste instead of representing
all the classes. The Chief Minister also met the Union Home Minister along with the leaders of different
states to include the Jats among the backward classes and he was trying to get OBC status for
Jats for which they are not eligible,” Virodhi claimed. |
