Raids in Sirsa; Kanda’s
kin, aides questioned
Sirsa, August 17 A team led by Inspector Pradeep Kumar of the Crime Branch of the Delhi police today went to the residence of Bunty Bansal, a close relative of Kanda who was detained during raids on the night of August 15 after the police learnt that he had talked on the telephone to someone in Nepal for over 40 minutes. The police had come to Sirsa after tracing a long duration call made to some telephone number in Nepal from mobile phone 09215720999. Though the SIM of this number is registered in someone else’s name, Bansal had been using it for a long time. The police questioned Bunty’s wife Shilpa Bansal, who reportedly told the police that her husband had spoken to her aunt, who lives in Nepal. The six-member police party quizzed Bunty Bansal’s family members for over a quarter of an hour. Meanwhile, Kanda’s supporters today expressed their resentment at repeated raids carried out on their houses and alleged that the Delhi police was harassing them without any reason. |
Union protests Maruti’s new HR policy, sacking of staff
Gurgaon, August 17 According to sources, the policy was formulated for selecting lower staff after the resignation of a few managers following the July 18 violence. “The management was perturbed when many managers resigned as they feared that mayhem might recur. But now those managers have the power to choose workers," said a senior Maruti Suzuki official. The company has sent termination orders to 500-odd workers, including the 154 who have been arrested for indulging in violence on July 18. Workers’ unions have condemned the move, calling it biased and unfair. Maruti Udyog Kamgar Union (MUKU), the workers’ body at the Gurgaon factory of Maruti Suzuki India (MSI), along with other unions like Left trade unions CITU and AITUC organised a protest rally against the termination and new HR policy. The unions demanded Haryana government's intervention in reversing the decision. Condemning the decision, CITU general secretary Tapas Sen said they opposed the violence at the plant on July 18 in which the General Manager of the factory was killed and many injured. "We demanded a comprehensive independent enquiry into the incident, including the antecedents to punish the guilty as well as the provocateurs behind the violence. But, instead the state government launched a witch hunt, targeting the workers and began their mass-scale arrests. In such a context, summary dismissal of 500 regular workers is tantamount to inflicting capital punishment on them in respect of their livelihood before the guilt is proved. The termination of such a big number of workers requires obtaining prior permission from the government," said Sen. |

Schoolgirls vow to fight female foeticide
Jandli Kalan (Fatehabad), August 17
“It will be my sincere effort to awaken my family members, kin and society against the menace of female foeticide and I will oppose the practice, ” the girls took a collective pledge during the open seminar. Among those witnessing the resolve of the schoolgirls were Fatehabad Deputy Commissioner ML Kaushik, Chief Judicial Magistrate (Legal Services Authority) Harish Gupta, City Magistrate Shalini Chetal and DSP Shamsher Singh Dahiya. While the mahapanchayat against female foeticide held recently in Bibipur (Jind) was special due to the role of khap panchayats in it, today’s open seminar at Jandli Kalan was unique as it was organised exclusively by schoolgirls. Jandli Kalan, a Jat-dominated village located nearly 18 km from Fatehabad town, has a population of 5,238 — 2,716 males and 2,522 females. In the 0 to 6 years category, there are 241 girls against 273 boys, as per the household survey conducted by teachers for enrolment of dropout children. The village has at least 150 men living under forced bachelorhood as their families could not find brides for them due to the skewed gender ratio in the state. More than 20 village youths have “purchased” brides from Bihar, Jharkhand and Assam. The nearby Gorakhpur village has nearly 500 men living under forced bachelorhood. The problem is becoming acute in almost all villages in Haryana, which stands at the bottom of the gender ratio table in the country. “In today’s programme organised by the girls from senior secondary classes of the Jandli Kalan government school, among the participants were girls from 35 schools from rural areas and women sarpanches and panchayat members from nealy 20 neighbouring villages,” said school principal Krishan Kumar. |
Shivalik board reconstituted
Chandigarh, August 17 The board was set up for the development of the Shivalik region covering the districts of
Ambala, Yamunanagar and Panchkula. The intention was to develop the hilly area of Haryana on the same footing as Himachal
Pradesh. About four years ago, the board had decided to promote horticultural and watershed management programmes in the area under it to create job opportunities and maintain the ecological balance. As the petition for the release of funds to the board and nomination of non-official members came up for hearing before the Division Bench of Acting Chief Justice Jasbir Singh and Justice Rakesh Kumar
Jain, an affidavit by Commissioner (Ambala)-cum-board chairman R.P. Gupta was placed on record. The affidavit said the board’s governing body meeting too had been fixed for August 30. It was added that a grant of Rs 700 lakh was received against the allocation of Rs 1,000 lakh in 2011-12. Of this, Rs 418.55 lakh had been released for Panchkula district. In all, more than 50 per cent of the funds were released and spent on development works. The assertion came on a petition filed in public interest by advocate Vijay
Bansal. In his petition against the State of Haryana and other respondents, he had sought directions for the release of funds for the development of the area falling within the board’s jurisdiction. Directions were also sought for the nomination of board’s non-official members as it “had not been done since 2001”. Gupta, on the other hand, claimed that the board’s coordinate committee met in October 2007, August 2009, June 2011 and August this year. The governing body too met on August 19, 2008. |
