Praying for the speedy recovery of their daughter Pooja, Baijnath and his wife sit with hands folded into a prayer outside the Advanced Trauma Centre of the PGI where she is admitted. A bright student, Pooja, had set off to school this morning when a rashly driven CTU bus hit her cycle and injured her critically.

Panchkula, August 17
One person was killed and three were seriously injured when the autorickshaw in which they were travelling was hit by a police vehicle belonging to the SHO of the Sector 5 police station near Sector 25 today. The deceased has been identified as the auto driver, Gurmeet.

A 28-year-old cyclist was killed after being hit by a rashly driven Swift car on the road separating Sectors 11 and 12 near the PGI late last night.

Two-day police remand for accused
Mohali, August 17
Following yesterday’s stabbing incident that had left 50-year-old Raminder Kaur and her 16-year-old daughter injured, the local court today sent the accused, Maninder Singh and his friend Tajinder Singh, to a two-day police remand.

Good news for CITCO employees

In a significant decision, the Board of Directors of Chandigarh Industrial and Tourism Development Corporation (CITCO) in its meeting today approved the revised grade pay and other allowances to various categories of employees of the corporation, including the operational staff working in its hotels.

Car dealer penalised
Chandigarh, August 17
A local car dealer, along with a Noida-based car dealer, has been penalised for selling a car with ineffective air-conditioner to a city resident. The UT Consumer Forum has directed the two dealers to pay Rs 50,000 to the complainant for not addressing the problem of "foul smell emitting from the ineffective AC unit".

The Resident Welfare Forum, Sector 50, yesterday submitted a memorandum to the MC Commissioner highlighting the problems of their area. They complained that the officials did not do anything to rid the area of wild growth.

PU gives in to students' demand

The Student Organisation of Panjab University (SOPU) ended its four-day long hunger strike after the university accepted their demand to conduct MPhil entrance exam at the department of police administration for the students who could not appear for the exam due to a language barrier. Students who wanted to write the exam in Punjabi were not allowed to sit for it.

4 peddlers held as police intensifies campaign

Intensifying its campaign against drug peddlers, the district police has claimed to have arrested four drug peddlers at various checkposts. Habit-forming drugs including tablets, capsules and injections were also recovered during the drive.

Seeking a thorough probe into the case involving irregularities in the theme park project, the complainant in the case moved an application in the CBI court yesterday asking the court as to why senior UT officials had been let off by the CBI and also asked the court during the course of arguments as to why former UT Administrator SF Rodrigues was not questioned even once though the CVC report had aroused suspicion that high-ups were involved.

Charges framed against eight accused
Chandigarh, August 17
A local court today framed charges of culpable homicide against eight accused involved in the murder of a youth at Aroma lights in January this year. Court of Additional District and Sessions Judge Preeti Sahni framed charges of culpable homicide not amounting to murder under Section 304 of the IPC against all the accused.

Chandigarh, August 17
The highly decomposed body of a 32-year-old senior auditor with the Punjab AG office was found at his Sector 41 residence here today. Anoop Lingwal allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself on August 14 and it was only today that the suicide came to light when neighbours noticed a foul smell emanating from his house and informed the police.

Karan shines in St Joseph’s victory

An unbeaten Partnership between Karan sood (51) and Rakshit Srivastava (24) enabled St Joseph's XI to beat Gurukul School, Manimajra, by ten wickets in the inaugural match of the fourth St Joseph’s Cricket Tournament. The tournament is being played at St Joseph’s school. The Gurukul XI won the toss and decided to bat first but accurate bowling by Divyansh, Avneet Singh and Aniket, who claimed two wickets each, reduced the Gurukul team to 89 runs in 20 over match.Later St Joseph’s team comfortably achieved the target without losing any wicket .
