DU students protest Meta College concept
Fewer takers for innovative B.Tech. Humanities
Ananya Panda
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, August 17
With resentment against the semester system across undergraduate courses at Delhi University (DU) still being felt, the response to the latest pilot project, B.Tech. Humanities, is no different.

The opposition is from many groups, including the students' wing of Socialist Unity Centre of India (Communist)--All India Democratic Students Organisation (AIDSO), which today held a protest in front of the DU's Arts faculty on north campus.

According to AIDSO, the 'Meta College' system, based on interdisciplinary approach, will jeopardise the specialised process and compromise the standard of education.

"How can B.Tech. course be linked with humanities? It is irrational. This will remove the culture of discipline in students who are already bearing the pressure of semester system," said Prashant, secretary of AIDSO's Delhi Committee.

The experimental course, which furthers the government's flagship educational reforms, has witnessed fewer takers with nearly 600 applications landing up at the Cluster Innovation Centre for the designated 40 seats.

But this has not dissuaded the DU officials who maintain that the innovative course was introduced in the middle when most of the students had already opted for their desired disciplines.

Today was the last date of applying for the four-year graduation degree course, which offers students a broader choice to mix and match courses available at DU colleges. Under this concept, a student can switch one's discipline at the end of the semester.

"The Meta College concept is an innovative project, an extension of government's reforms, involving clubbing the knowledge and giving wider choices to students. Under B.Tech. Humanities, five subjects have been identified--designing and crafting, education, journalism, counselling and other course for which we have received nearly 600 applications. We are in the process of collaborating with Jamia Millia Islamia," said deputy dean, students' welfare Satish Kumar.

However, this is yet another step towards making the education system in tune with the market trends, according to AIDSO.

"We have been opposing the anti-student measures, starting from fee hike, implementation of the semester system, privatisation and commercialisation of education of which the Meta College's B. Tech. Humanities is the latest example," added Prashant while decrying the promotion of privitisation under the Foreign Educational Intuitions (Regulation of Entry and Operations) Act.

Jawan seeks fair deal in his own way

New Delhi, August 17
An Indian Army jawan climbed up a 200-foot tower near New Delhi Railway Station on Friday to protest against the alleged harassment by his seniors.

The jawan has been identified as K Muthu Kumar and till late night, he was still up at the tower. A police official said that Kumar demands that the Defence Minister, AK Antony, should assure him that he will not be transferred frequently to different postings.

He was recruited in the Army on October 21, 1998. Army sources said Kumar was a sapper of the 69 Engineers Regiment (ERE). He had returned from ERE at Army Digital Mapping Centre in Bangalore in March this year. He had asked for premature retirement from the Army, but was sent to Bengal Engineers Centre.

He was punished while in ERE. He climbed up a mobile tower earlier also in Bangalore.

In a note that Muthu gave to the mediapersons, he alleges that his casual leave was cancelled and another Army official was given his government accommodation. He also claims that thereafter he climbed on to the roof of an office at his unit and demanded that he should be either granted leave or allotted accommodation. However, he was posted in another location.

Kumar has allegedly mentioned in the note that his leave was cut short earlier when he wanted to go to his village after his father's death.

"The BJP has deputed volunteers to ensure the safety of the northeast people and extend help to them in case of any emergency," said Vijender Gupta, Delhi BJP president.

Yesterday, a delegation of the BJP met the police commissioner to express concerns about the safety of the northeast people living in Delhi.

"The commissioner told us that he had directed all DCPs to detain and take strict action against anyone found spreading rumours or panic. All district in-charges have been directed to keep a 24-hour vigil in their areas," he said.

Extend land lease of displaced persons: NDMC
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, August 17
The North Delhi Municipal Corporation (NDMC) has urged Lieutenant Governor (LG) Tejindra Khanna to issue orders to extend the perpetual lease period of the land of the people who were displaced from Jaisingh Pura in 1913 when Delhi became the capital of India.

The lease has been expired in 2005 but the corporation requested to extend it till 2020.

"One year after Delhi became the capital in 1913, land was acquired in Karol Bagh and western extension to resettle the displaced persons from Jaisingh Pura and they were allotted land on 99 years' perpetual lease. In 1916 butchers and tanners were removed from the city area and resettled in Basti Reghar," said Yogender Chandoliya, chairman of the standing committee.

"The area is the biggest commercial hub not only in the city, but also in the country and generating considerable revenue to the government in the form of various taxes. So, extension of the lease will further enhance the badly needed funds for development of civic amenities in the NDMC," the chairman said.

The extension of the lease period will help the state government and the corporation in earning revenue from the way of allowing building activity as per rules, he said. "Approximately, 5 per cent leases have been extended. Due to non-extension of the lease, building plans are not sanctioned in the area which was allotted on 99 years perpetual lease," he said.

The areas include Shidipura, Basti Harphool Singh Qasabpura, Ahata Kidra, Basti Reghar, Multani Dhanda, Mohall Siqligaram, Sarai Rohilla, Subzi Mandi Extension Delhi Ajmeri Gate Scheme, Andha Mughal Town Extension Scheme, Bidan Pura (now Harisingh Nalwa Street), Dev Nagar and adjoining areas.
