Abducted by friend, girl freed

The police today rescued a DU student and arrested her friend, an Indraprastha University graduate, who abducted her for a ransom of Rs 1.5 crore. The girl was saved within 16 hours of her kidnapping.

BJP demands Kanda’s arrest

Stating that immediate arrest of Gopal Goyal Kanda in Geetika Sharma suicide case could have solved the mystery of her death by now, the Delhi unit of the BJP today met Police Commissioner Neeraj Kumar and urged him to arrest the accused.

Abducted by friend, girl freed

The police today rescued a DU student and arrested her friend, an Indraprastha University graduate, who abducted her for a ransom of Rs 1.5 crore. The girl was saved within 16 hours of her kidnapping.

DCP Sindhu Pillai said the accused, Abhishek Deep, hails from Chattisgarh's .

"Abhishek said that he was in dire need of money. He planned to kidnap his friend for Rs 1.5 crore" Pillai added.

Ashwani Kumar informed the police that he received the ransom call made by an unknown person from his daughter's mobile phone. Kumar is a resident of Jalwayu Vihar in Noida Sector 25. Pillai said that Kumar received the ransom call at 10.20 pm on Wednesday.

The police learnt that Deep had telephoned her when she was outside her college and asked her to meet him at the Shastri Nagar Metro station.

"When they reached Connaught Place, he took her mobile phone and made a call to her father. He then switched off her phone and threatened her to obey his instructions, otherwise her father would be killed," Pillai said.

Deep took the victim to the Hotel Ashoka at Paharganj, according to the police. He locked her inside the room. The police somehow traced the victim and rescued her from the hotel. The cops also apprehended Deep from there.

BJP demands Kanda’s arrest

Stating that immediate arrest of Gopal Goyal Kanda in Geetika Sharma suicide case could have solved the mystery of her death by now, the Delhi unit of the BJP today met Police Commissioner Neeraj Kumar and urged him to arrest the accused.

A delegation of the BJP leaders led by party president Vijender Gupta met the Police Commissioner and handed him over a letter.

Demanding immediate arrest of former Haryana minister Gopal Kanda, the party today said that the ''delay'' in action against him for allegedly abetting the suicide of his former employee has brought to fore the trust deficit between people and the police.

Sushil’s award doubled to Rs 2 crore
Rs 2 lakh for US firing victims’ kin

The Delhi Cabinet today decided to enhance the award announced for Olympics medal winner wrestler Sushil Kumar from Rs 1 crore to Rs 2 crore.

The Cabinet, meanwhile, also decided to give Rs 2 lakh each to the Delhi-based families of two victims of the gurdwara firing at Wisconsin, America, and fund the education of the victims' dependants. The families live at Chand Nagar.

The Cabinet meeting was headed by Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit.

NSG officials honoured

An official of the National Security Guard (NSG) has been awarded the Police Medal for Distinguished Service and three other officials have been given the Police Medal for Meritorious Service on the occasion of Independence Day.

Prahlad Choudhary, team commander, has bagged the Police Medal for Distinguished Service while Dr Bhupendra Kumar Mehta, Pratap Singh and Ganesh Kumar have got the Police Medal for Meritorious Service.

Cop commits suicide

A 38-year-old Delhi police constable allegedly committed suicide by shooting himself with a service revolver at a jungle near Badarpur this evening.

The victim identified as Vinod who was posted at the security wing.

He was a native of Jhunjhunu in Rajasthan. He was reportedly depressed due to an illness, said the police.
