Child drowns in septic tank
Machhiwara, August 16
A three-year-old child died when he fell into a newly constructed septic tank at Machhiwara today. Jaspal Singh, father of the child and a resident of Govind Nagar Rahon Road, Machhiwara, said he and his wife were not at home when the incident took place. His three-year-old son was playing, while his two children were at home.

14-yr-old girl dies of snakebite
Ludhiana, August 16
A 14-year-old girl died of snakebite in Haibowal on the Monday night. Geeta, a resident of Haibowal, was sleeping on the floor at her home when a snake bit her. She raised the alarm and her three siblings, who were sleeping on the bed in the same room, rushed to help her.

16 held for immoral trafficking
Ludhiana, August 16
The police has arrested 16 persons, including eight women, under the Immoral Trafficking Act. The police said many arrested women were married. The Police Division Number 7 arrested Preeti, a resident of LIG flats near Vardhman Chowk. She allegedly lured girls and women into the flesh trade.

E&T website develops snag
Ludhiana, August 16
Hundreds of traders were left high and dry toady as the official website of the Excise and Taxation Department developed a technical snag. The department has started online filing for the intra-state trade transactions, but traders were not able to log in onto ‘e-trip’ link on the website for hours.

Saru S left her job as a schoolteacher to concentrate on art. She learnt painting for quite some time and picked up the brush only after 16 years, learning, drawing, sketching and then painting on her own. “I have been making mistakes, learning and evolving in the process,” she says.

Students of Government Senior Secondary School for Girls, Sahnewal, seem to be disappointed with the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI). They feel the NHAI has over-looked the gravity of their problem while fixing the points for erecting subways or for that matter, foot-over bridges as road widening of NH-1 is going on.

Despite the strict instructions of the education department, practice of non-teaching work is still going on in government schools. About three months ago, Education Minister had reverted all the teachers to schools who used to work in the education department offices on deputation.

PSPCL JE booked for misappropriating official material worth Rs 15 lakh
Ludhiana, August 16
The police has booked a junior engineer (JE) working at the central zone of Punjab State Power Corporation Limited (PSPCL) for allegedly misappropriating official material worth Rs 15.52 lakh. The accused has left the city along with his family. A case under Section 409 of the IPC has been registered against him at Basti Jodhewal police station.

Security guard dies mysteriously
Ludhiana, August 16
Karanjit Singh, 35-years old, a security guard in Amarvir Private Ltd (dealing in cycle parts), died on the factory premises in the wee hours today. Devinder Chaudhry, the concerned SHO, said that the last night Karanjit Singh, asked another fellow to give duty in his place as he was not feeling well and his colleague agreed to swap the duty.

City team struggle, post 220 on first day
Ludhiana, August 16
After suffering initial losses, Ludhiana was able to manage a respectable score of 220 against Chandigarh, on the opening day of the four-day match in the Punjab State Inter-district Cricket Tournament for the Katoch Shield. The match is being played at Sector 16, Chandigarh.
