Govt no to arts college at Naggar
Shimla, August 16 There was a proposal to upgrade the Arts Academy functioning near the IRMT into a full-fledged college on the main campus but the chances of that happening seem bleak as the ICR team has already conveyed its unwillingness to support the move. The ICR team from Russia, which is currently camping at Naggar, has made it clear to the Himachal Government that it will not support the college as it was never meant to be the part of the centre envisioned by Roerich himself. “Since the ICR as well as the state government is not keen to have an arts college, the idea stands dropped and the entire thrust will now be on having a proper museum, research centre and a cultural centre,” said Chief Secretary, Sudripta Roy, who recently visited Naggar. He said the ICR and the IRMT would shortly sign an MoU, which would elucidate the main objectives envisioned by Roerich himself when he had set up the institute at Naggar. Roy said the arts academy was not part of the main campus and the decision not to support the project had already been conveyed to the Russian Embassy as well. “The ICR has assured us that they will help raise financial assistance for the project so that the main objectives can be achieved,” said Roy. The decision about the arts college not being part of the main campus had also been conveyed to the Russian Embassy. The inventory work being done by the ICR team has been accomplished and the Russians were likely to return to Moscow within a weeks’ time. Officials said the paintings and other artefacts that were not on display had been kept under lock so that they remain safe till proper display galleries were ready in the museum. One key of this room containing the artefacts will remain with the representative of the Himachal Government and one with the Russian member in the IRMT, to ensure the safety of the same. |

Will contest poll: Virbhadra
Una, August 16 He said: “It is not possible that the General can leave the ground and the Army is left on its own to fight the war.” He ruled out assumptions regarding his own faction in the state Congress. He said factions were those who were in minority. Those in majority do not compose factions. Accusing the present BJP government in the state of committing corruption, Virbhadra appealed to people to vote consciously for good candidates. While speaking about the Congress charge sheet against the
BJP, he said there was still time for submitting the document. A strong charge sheet could still be prepared against the present government. In case the Congress leadership intended, he could accompany them to the President for submitting the charge sheet against the present BJP government, he said. He said if the Congress was voted to power in the state, a special court would be set up to hold speedy trial in corruption charges against the BJP
government. Virbhadra also dispelled the notions that he was not being heard by the party high command. He was in the Haroli area of Una district yesterday to inaugurate a private hospital. Haroli is represented by Mukesh
Agnihotri, the Congress MLA and loyalist of Virbhadra. Though he denied it, factionalism was quite obvious during his visit to Una on Wednesday. Only his loyalists, including Mukesh Agnihotri and Ram Lal
Thakur, were present during the party rally held at Haroli. Other Congress leaders from the district, including OP Rattan from
Una, MLA Rakesh Kalia from Chintpurni and Ram Nath Sharma, were conspicuous by their absence. |

Our Correspondent
Palampur, August 16 He said this programme of the university would give exposure to university scientists so that they would serve farmers in a better way. Addressing a news conference here recently, Dr Sharma said in the global scenario one could not live in isolation and it had become necessary for scientists to exchange their views which could produce new results and technology both ways. He said out of 42 agriculture universities in the country, the university had been ranked at the sixth position because of its achievements and hard work of the scientists working here. Dr Sharma said the university would lay emphasis on the cultivation of basmati rice in the state. A variety of basmati rice known as “kasturi” would be developed, which was found quite suitable for cultivation in hilly regions of the country. He said preliminary studies revealed that the basmati rice would be another cash crop for farmers of the state as it had a great demand in foreign countries. |
