It seemed that the Independence Day function held at the Parade Ground in Sector 5 was meant only for high-ups, as residents were not even allowed to enter the venue. Haryana Governor Jagannath Pahadia unfurled the National Flag. As many as 1,900 participants were present at the function. "Is it just a government ritual?" asked Damini Verma, a resident of Sector 2, Panchkula. One could just see government officials, schoolchildren, teachers, awardees and their relatives at the venue.

Infant’s body recovered from drain
Ambala, August 16
A body of a newly-born boy was recovered from a drain close to a boundary wall of the local Civil Hospital this noon. The infant’s body was packed in a gunny bag. The police sources said a dog was trying to carry the bag and in that attempt the body fell on the road.

Anchit Mahajan of Panchkula defeated Sahil of Yaumnagar in the first match under boys' singles (u-19) category in the 46th Haryana State Senior Open Badminton Championship that commenced at Tau Devi Lal Stadium, Sector 3, here today. Anchit won the match 13-21, 21-12 and 21-11.

Badminton championship kicks off

The Yonex Chandigarh State Badminton Championship kicked off at Badminton Hall of Sector 42 Sports Complex today. A total of 600 badminton players have marked their presence in the three-day event. The tournament is being organised by the Chandigarh Badminton Association in both boys and girls (U-10, U-13, U-15,U-17, U-19 and seniors) category.

Table tennis player, Shubhangi, of Delhi Public School Sector 40 defeated Aparna from Gurukul Public School to win the final match of girls (U-12) event during the Prof RS Mehta Memorial Open Table Tennis Tournament organised by the Chandigarh Table Tennis Association at Table Tennis Hall of Sector 23 here today. Shubhangi defeated Aparna by 11-5, 11-8, 9-11, 13-11 (3-1).Earlier, in the semi-finals of the category, Shubhangi defeated Vasundhara by 11-5, 11-8, 11-13, 11-9 (3-1) while Aparna overcame Vibhuti by 11-8, 5-11, 11-9, 10-12, 11-8 (3-2).
