Infant’s body recovered from drain

Ambala, August 16
A body of a newly-born boy was recovered from a drain close to a boundary wall of the local Civil Hospital this noon. The infant’s body was packed in a gunny bag. The police sources said a dog was trying to carry the bag and in that attempt the body fell on the road.

Following which the passersby informed the police. Injuries were found on the head of the deceased. The police took the body to the Civil Hospital for postmortem examination. A clip on the abdomen of the infant was found, which is generally tagged after delivery. The police said they would visit nursing homes to get some clue on the matter. — TNS

Doctors shut clinics in protest

Fatehgarh Sahib, August 16
The doctors in the district closed their clinics in protest against the alleged beating of Dr Harpreet Singh and ransacking his hospital Harpreet Medical Complex, Sirhind, by unidentified persons last night.

The doctor sustained serious injuries and was admitted to the local Civil Hospital. A delegation of doctors led by Dr Mohinder Singla, district president of Indian Medical Association (IMA), presented a memorandum to deputy commissioner and SSP demanding a fair probe into the incident. The delegation also demanded adequate security to the doctors and the hospital.

While talking to The Tribune, Dr Mohinder Singla said last night three unidentified persons came to the hospital in a black car. One of them complained of a knee problem. As the doctor bent to check his knee, they attacked him with baseball sticks. They ransacked the hospital and within a few minutes they fled away. He said it was a well-planned attack on him as they choose the closing timing to attack him. He said doctors are always soft targets. He said they have urged the DC and SSP to ensure protection to the doctors or else they would have to stop checking patients at odd hours. Dr. Harpreet Singh said he has no enmity with anyone nor he has seen these attackers before.

Interestingly members of District Likahri Sabha also joined the delegation as Dr Harpreet Singh also a writer and their member. When contacted, HS Mann SSP said a case under Sections 452, 406, 523 of the IPC has been registered and police is investigating the matter. He said sketches are being prepared as per the information of the doctor. He assured that law and order would be maintained and the culprit would be arrested soon.

CMD of Punjab State Power Corporation Limited KD Chaudhri unfurled the National Flag and inspected the guard of honour at the PSPCL headquarters in Patiala.

Chaudhri said the power sector was passing through a difficult phase. "Notwithstanding the power crisis, I appreciate the efforts made by officers/employees of the PSPCL for providing satisfactory electricity supply and consumer-friendly services to 75 lakh consumers of Punjab," he said.

He also gave away prizes to 25 best employees.

State Bank of Patiala

The State Bank of Patiala celebrated 66th Independence Day in its head office. Achal Kumar Gupta, managing director of the bank, hoisted the Tricolour. A cultural programme was held. Children from SOS village, Patiala, and students of School for Deaf and Blind participated in the programme.

Pepsu Roadways Transport Corporation

PRTC chairman Ranjit Singh Balian hoisted the National Flag in the head office on the Nabha road. Managing director of the PRTC DPS Kharbanda was also present on the occasion. Seventeen persons were given jobs on compassionate grounds, 43 employees were honoured for good work and 22 Class III and Class IV employees were promoted.

'At Home'

Chandigarh: Many VIPs, including Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal and his son Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Badal, attended the "At Home" function organised by Punjab Governor and UT Administrator Shivraj V Patil at Punjab Raj Bhawan.

Governor Shivraj V Patil met bureaucrats, politicians and dignitaries.

The invitees preferred staying near the Governor's house as there was some shade. Patil proposed the vote of thanks.

Rs 1.5 lakh robbed

Mohali, August 16
An employee of Indus Hospital alleged that two motorcycle-borne riders snatched his bag containing Rs 1.5 lakh here this morning.

Rakesh Kumar, the victim, alleged that he was on his cycle, when two miscreants snatched the bag. The incident occurred at Phase VI. The police said they were verifying the facts. “People have seen Rakesh running but there was no eyewitness who claimed that he/she has seen the snatchers. We are also investigating the victim’s claim,” said the police. The police registered a case under Section 382, IPC, at Phase I police station. — TNS

Liquor seized

Chandigarh, August 16
The Special Technical Operation Cell of PCR launched a special drive to check illegal supply and sale of liquor on Independence day. The police recovered 41 cases of liquor from various places in the city.

About 28 cases were recovered from a Maruti car on the road separating Sectors 52 and 53. The accused, Mohammad Irfan and Mohammad Imran, residents of Mohali, were arrested and a case under 61-1-14 Excise Act has been registered. Three cases of country-made liquor were recovered from house number 1390, Phase-I, Ramdarbar. One Dara was arrested and a case under the Excise Act has been registered. Ten cases and 125 quarters of liquor were recovered from a house in Sector 29. — TNS

Anchit Mahajan of Panchkula defeated Sahil of Yaumnagar in the first match under boys' singles (u-19) category in the 46th Haryana State Senior Open Badminton Championship that commenced at Tau Devi Lal Stadium, Sector 3, here today. Anchit won the match 13-21, 21-12 and 21-11.

A total of 174 boys and 59 girls from the 18 districts of the state are participating in the tournament under various categories.

Day one: Jalandhar team score 252

On the first day of Punjab State Inter-district Senior Tournament for Katoch Shield, the Jalandhar team made a solid start after scoring 252 runs against Patiala, at Government Model Senior Secondary School Sector 26 here today.

After wining the toss, Jalandhar’s skipper Mandeep Singh elected to bat first. The opening pair of Robin Singh and Pargat Singh put on 35 runs before Robin Singh (20) was caught by Rajwinder off Robin Dhillon. Taruwar Kohli was the next to go after scoring 4 runs.

Later on, skipper Mandeep Singh joined Abhishek Gupta and the duo stitched a total 92 runs partnership for the fourth wicket before Mandeep Singh was cleaned up by Beant Singh on the individual score of 53 runs. Rahul Sharma also added an essential score of 28 runs, including three boundaries. He added 37 runs for the 7th wicket with Ishan Malhotra (31). For Patiala, Beant Singh remain the most successful bowler after claiming 3 for 51 while Robin Dhillon and Rajwinder Gollu grabbed two wickets each.
