Miscreants snatch cash, jewellery
Hoshiarpur, August 29
Two unidentified turbaned youths snatched Rs 11,000, gold chain weighing about one tola, gold ring and a mobile phone from Amarjit Singh of Ward 1, Dasuya, last night. According to the police, Amarjit Singh and his brother Balwinder Singh were returning to their house on a motorcycle after closing their shops at Chack Bamu and Gorsian villages, respectively.

5 booked in dowry case

The NRI police station here last night registered a case under Sections 498 A of the IPC against Sagibjit Singh, his father Jarnail Singh, mother Santosh Kaur, brother Jashandeep Singh, all residents of Saidkheri Road, Rajpura, Patiala district, sister Jasdeep Kaur, wife of Avtar Singh of Neerpur Jattan, Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar district, for torturing and maltreating Gurjot Kaur, daughter of Parminder Singh of Mangat village.

Kabaddi player fired at, injured
Tarn Taran, August 29
Gurpal Singh Poppi, a kabaddi player, was injured when a rival group of kabaddi players opened fired at him in Nagoke village yesterday. The Verowal police had registered a case under the Sections 307, 34 IPC, 25, 54, 59 of the Arms Act against the three kabaddi players.

‘Run for sports’ organised

To celebrate National Sports Day in the memory of hockey Legend late Dhian Chand, the District Sports Welfare Association organised a “Run for sports” here today. A function was organised in which students of various schools, prominent sportspersons, representatives of various social and religious organisations participated.

Two unidentified turbaned youths snatched Rs 11,000, gold chain weighing about one tola, gold ring and a mobile phone from Amarjit Singh of Ward 1, Dasuya, last night. According to the police, Amarjit Singh and his brother Balwinder Singh were returning to their house on a motorcycle after closing their shops at Chack Bamu and Gorsian villages, respectively.

When they reached near Pandori Araiyan village, two turbaned youths came in an Indica car and stopped their vehicle in front of their motorcycle. The car occupants threw chilli powder in their eyes and snatched the cash and valuables and fled in their vehicle.

The Dasuya police has registered a case under Sections 382 and 34 of the IPC. — OC

5 booked in dowry case

The NRI police station here last night registered a case under Sections 498 A of the IPC against Sagibjit Singh, his father Jarnail Singh, mother Santosh Kaur, brother Jashandeep Singh, all residents of Saidkheri Road, Rajpura, Patiala district, sister Jasdeep Kaur, wife of Avtar Singh of Neerpur Jattan, Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar district, for torturing and maltreating Gurjot Kaur, daughter of Parminder Singh of Mangat village.

According to the police, Gurjot Kaur stated that she was married to Sagibjit Singh. All the accused had been torturing and maltreating her for bringing dowry from her parents since her marriage, she alleged.

Kabaddi player fired at, injured

Gurpal Singh Poppi, a kabaddi player, was injured when a rival group of kabaddi players opened fired at him in Nagoke village yesterday. The Verowal police had registered a case under the Sections 307, 34 IPC, 25, 54, 59 of the Arms Act against the three kabaddi players.

The police said the accused had been identified as Gurpreet Singh Gopi, Jasbir Singh and Palwinder Singh.

Sources said during the final match, accused Gurpreet Singh fired a gun shot in the air from his pistol then in fit of rage he fired at Gurpal Singh.

Gurpal had been admitted to a hospital in serious condition.

Kewal Singh, Investigating Officer (IO) said no accused had been arrested yet though raids had been conducted on the possible hideouts of the accused.

‘Run for sports’ organised

To celebrate National Sports Day in the memory of hockey Legend late Dhian Chand, the District Sports Welfare Association organised a “Run for sports” here today. A function was organised in which students of various schools, prominent sportspersons, representatives of various social and religious organisations participated.

While paying floral tributes to hockey legend late Dhian Chand, Tikshan Sud, former Punjab minister and president of the District Sports Welfare Association, explained the importance of sports and appealed to the students to take part in sports activities to make themselves mentally and physically fit.

He honoured leading sportspersons who brought laurels to the district in national and international games, their coaches, representatives of various NGOs and journalists, who had contributed for the promotion of games.

Later, Tikshan Sud flagged off “Run for sports”, in which thousands of students of various schools participated. The participants ran on the roads passing through the main bazaars of the city.
