DGSE taken aback to find govt schools sans teachers
Amritsar, August 31 Pannu said there was no teacher in Government Middle School, Bhaini Massa Singh village; Government High School, Rajoke, and Government High School, Madher Mathera Bhagi village. As a result, hundreds of students were being taught by untrained and semi-literate village girls who had been engaged by the villagers. The infrastructure too was woefully inadequate in these schools. At the Government High School in the border village of Van Tara Singh, only one teacher was attending to 125 students of five classes from Class VI-X. The classrooms too were dingy. Pannu said only one or two teachers managing the affairs of high schools where so many classes and subjects were to be taught. He said he also came across such schools where only one teacher was posted and who too was absent from duty. Drawbacks like short attendance of students and lack of cleanliness in schools also came to the fore during the inspection. It was also found that though computer labs had been set up in schools, there was nobody to impart computer education. Similarly, various equipments were gathering dust in closed classrooms. The inspection teams also found students studying under trees in various schools as there was no power supply. During the inspection, 41 teachers were found absent from their duty. Besides, 76 teachers reported late for duty while 14 were found to be absent for long. The DGSE sought an explanation from the teachers found absent from duty while warning the latecomers. He also issued orders of departmental action against those missing from duty for long time. After the inspection, the DGSE held a meeting with the district education officials and stated that the shortage of teachers in these schools would be overcome soon. Besides rationalisation of the staff, the schools having very less number of students will be merged with the neighbouring schools. He said the district education officers will be held accountable if the students were not provided proper education despite all facilities. |

Sukhbir lays foundation stone of new bus stand
Gurdaspur, August 31 While the residents had been denied their due from past six years, the political exigencies meant that the DAC gets mired in controversies, following which the construction has been delayed. It was a red day letter for the residents but due to some inexplicable reason, officials deemed to take off the project out of Sukhbir’s schedule leaving the locals flummoxed at the turn of events. The DAC is expected to be a boon for local people as well as for the government offices of the district. The Deputy Chief Minister, who was accompanied by BJP National Executive member Swaran Salaria, flew in from Chandigarh to Pathankot from where he drove to Gurdaspur. A senior officer said the district administration officials were unnerved by the presence of a massive rally held by hundreds of comrades just adjacent to where the Deputy CM laid the foundation stone. The mega project is certainly jinxed. Earlier, on May 17, 2006, the former Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh had laid the foundation stone at the TV tower. However, a year later when the SAD-BJP romped to power, the venture got mired in a plethora of controversies with some politicians wanting the building to come up near the Batala bye pass. For six long years, the project was swept under the carpet till the Deputy Commissioner, Dr Abhinav Trikha, managed to convince the powers about the need to establish the building. “Everyone wanted the structure to be built but the site was proving to be a contentious issue. However, now the Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal had cleared the files pertaining to its construction at the site adjoining the new judicial complex. The building will come up within two years and once completed, residents can get all their administrative work done under one roof,” said
Trikha. |
