Jalandhar, November 6
A jeweller was shot at by some youths at busy market area near Milap Chowk late this evening. The victim had only asked the accused why they had banged their car into his leading to the incident.

The youth, allegedly under the influence of liquor, hit the victim Amit Chopra with a bottle of beer on his head and later shot at his right thigh.

Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime), Rajpal Singh Sandhu, who visited the spot said Amit Chopra was on his way home in his car after work at the time of the incident.

The youth, in a Honda car, rammed their vehicle into Chopra’s car from behind. The collision led to arguments between the youth and the jeweller resulting in a scuffle.

While one of the accused took out a beer bottle and hit Chopra on his head another one shot at him from his licenced, .32-bore pistol. The bullet pierced through the right thigh of the victim, Sandhu said.

The accused seemed to be from a well off background. They did not take away any cash or valuables, he said.

The injured was rushed to the local Civil Hospital and was operated upon. His condition is stated to be stable.

The city police has sealed all the entry and exit points of the city and nakas were laid at several places. A hunt has been launched to nab the shooters. The police have also recovered the empty shell of the bullet from the scene of the crime.

The students are Beant Singh, Balwinder Singh, Kulwinder Singh, Harsangeet Singh, Mohit Kumar, Jagmohan Singh, Gurpreet Singh, Anuj Dhiman, Gaurav Paliyal and Naveen Pal. They under the guidance of Gaurav Dwivedi and Geetesh Goga, Head and Deputy Head of the Department, respectively, have developed the bio-diesel.

A seminar on the production and performance evaluation of bio-diesel from linseed oil was organised on the college campus.

Hitesh Gandhi, Vice Chairman of the KC Group of Institutes, presided over the seminar. Dr NL Hiregoudar, Principal, while addressing the gathering, said the bio-diesel was manufactured in a reactor with the help of Sodium Hydroxide (NaOH) and Methanolin in the college laboratory. The bio-diesel was filtered and various blends of it were prepared ie B10, B20, B30, B50 and B100. (B stands for percentage of bio-diesel in the mixture; rest is diesel). Then these blends were used in diesel engine.

“The test result shows that the efficiency in case of bio-diesel is comparable to that of pure diesel and the bio-diesel also results in lower smoke emission. The bio-diesel can be manufactured from various source of oil, like Jatropha, Pongamia. But in this experiment bio-diesel is developed from linseed oil; it is one of a unique type. The bio-diesel is used as fuel in European market so more research and development in this area is required to make it an alternative fuel in Indian," said Dr Hiregoudar.

"Rising prices of oil and gas and potential shortage of fuel in future leads to a concern over the security of energy supply and need to sustain our economic growth. Increasing use of fossil fuels also causes environmental problems. In view of the fast depletion of fossil fuels, the search for alternative fuels has become inevitable. Looking at the huge demand of diesel for transport sector, captive power generation and agricultural sector, the bio-diesel is being viewed as a substitute of diesel," he added.
