Three fake snatching to pocket
Rs 40 lakh; held
New Delhi, November 6 The police said it had recovered the entire money. The accused have been identified as Gurdeep Singh (32), Gaurav Siwadh (25) and Rohit Kumar (25). On October 31, the police was informed about the snatching of a bag containing huge amounts of Indian and foreign currencies. The incident was reported from Tilak Nagar. It was claimed that the snatching happened around 9 pm when Rohit and Gaurav along with the money were going to the house of Ashok Manu, the owner of the firm they worked for. Rohit and Gaurav work in the office of Nine to Nine Forex Private Limited, an authorised firm for Western Union Money Transfer, at Tilak Nagar. They had joined the firm recently. On being questioned, the two gave different versions of the incident, according to the police. "On further interrogation, they disclosed that they had made up the story of snatching. They said that they had conspired with Gurdeep, a property dealer friend of Ashok. On the day of the incident, they left the office with the bag and gave it to Gurdeep. The two then claimed that it had been snatched by motorcycle-borne men," said V Renganathan, additional commissioner of police, west district. Gurdeep was arrested from his house at Vishnu Garden in Tilak Nagar. The currency, worth more than Rs 40 lakh, was recovered from him. The three accused have been produced before a court. |
Inflated water bills enrage east Delhi
New Delhi, November 6 "My water consumption has been the same for the past several years. But I have received a bill of Rs 6,000 for two months, which is almost 10 times higher than the previous ones," said Manmohan Mehra , secretary, Kiran Vihar residents' welfare association (RWA). "Almost all households in east Delhi have received inflated bills. The Delhi Jal Board (DJB) governed by Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit has not officially increased the water tariff, then how has it sent such hefty bills?" he wondered. "We are still struggling to cope up with the hefty increase in power tariff and now the government has unofficially increased the water tariff. Most of the areas in trans-Yamuna do not receive water throughout the day and residents have to use water pumps to draw water from DJB pipelines. The rates have been hiked, but there is no improvement in the quality of the service," said Anil Bajpai, president of the RWA Federation, east Delhi. "Along with the hefty water bill, the DJB has charged a high amount for sewage cleaning. The sewage remains choked all the time and dirty water flows back into houses. We have decided to protest by not paying the inflated bills. We will pay only after they charge as per the normal rate," said Sunita Arora a resident who has received a bill of Rs 1,800 instead of the normal Rs 500-Rs 600. |
Delhi drinkers prefer IMFL; revenue up
New Delhi, November 6 The government had collected Rs 2,027 crore as excise tax in 2010-11 as against its collection of Rs 1,644 crore in 2009-10, said an official of the Excise Department. He said that in future this trend might continue provided business and trade grew in the Capital. With the latest figure given by the department concerned, 7.44 crore bottles of IMFL were sold in the national Capital in 2010-11 followed by "desi" liquor. Indian beer, which was the most preferred drink of Delhiites in 2009, slipped into the third place with the consumption of 5.95 crore bottles, the official said. In 2009-2010, a total number of 11.78 crore bottles of beer were sold in the city while 9.56 crore bottles of IMFL were sold during the same period. The consumption of desi liquor had occupied the third spot with the sale of 6.81 crore bottles in 2009-10, according to the statistics. In 2008-09, the people of the city had consumed 9.74 crore bottles of beer while a total of 8.39 crore bottles of IMFL were sold during the period. The preference for IMFL has been increasing in the last two years as in 2007-08 countrymade liquor had topped the list with 11.26 crore bottles. In 2007-08, 8.4 crore bottles of beer and 8.3 crore bottles of IMFL were consumed in Delhi. |

Nod for rapid transit system in
3 NCR corridors
New Delhi, November 6 According to an official press statement issued on Sunday, union urban development minister Kamal Nath gave in-principle to the concept and asked the NCR Planning Board(NCRPB) to explore innovative funding mechanisms like monetisation of land and the public private partnership model for implementing the capital-intensive projects. He also said RRTS should be integrated with the Delhi Metro. The minister, who is chairman of the NCRPB, said high speed connectivity between the regional centres of NCR and Delhi would make physical distance shorter and allow these regional towns to capture the economic impulse and density generated by Delhi. This faster connectivity would reduce pressure on national capital's infrastructure by opening up the regional housing market, he added. The minister said that to achieve the rationale of NCR, it would be necessary to focus on the sub-urbanisation and infrastructure development outside Delhi to enable the neighbouring towns to absorb the load on the capital's resources. Kamal Nath, who reviewed NCR Regional Plan-2021 proposals regarding regional-level land use and settlement policies at a meeting here earlier this week, said NCRPB should take a lead in planning and developing greenfield townships on the transport corridors in partnership with the state governments concerned. He called upon NCRPB to be more pro-active in enforcing policies prescribed in the regional plans finalised in consultation with these states. "Adherence of these policies by various central and state implementing agencies and NCRPB's active role in enforcing them is necessary, if we are to avoid haphazard developments and achieve harmonized and balanced development of the National Capital Region," he said. -- IANS |
DU told to admit OBC girl in law course
New Delhi, November 6 The court order, made available on Saturday, came on a petition by Salma Khan, who had applied for admission to first year of LLB course in the 2011-12 academic year. Khan, through her counsel Sitab Ali Chaudhary, appealed before the division bench against an order of a single judge bench which had earlier disposed off her petition with the direction that the university would allow her to participate in the special counselling for the vacant seats but as a general category candidate. Allowing Khan's appeal, a bench of Acting Chief Justice AK Sikri and Justice Rajiv Sahai Endlaw said, "We are unable to uphold the judgment directing the appellant belonging to the reserved category to compete with the unreserved category and which is contrary to the principles of reservation." On October 3, Justice Kailash Gambhir said: "Courts have consistently held that every endeavour by the university and all other institutions should be made to fill all the seats as wastage of seats is not only at the cost of the public exchequer but at the cost of depriving a number of aspiring students struggling to get admission..." Justice Gambhir directed the university to convert 50 OBC category seats, which were vacant since the completion of the admission process, into general category seats. Justice Gambhir passed the order on a plea by students seeking direction to the university to convert the vacant OBC category seats into general category seats. -- IANS |

According to official sources, the authorities recently unearthed half a dozen illegally functioning electroplating units in the Jhandpura area in Noida, the board headquarters then issued strict instructions. The water emanating from these units was found to contain alarming level of pollution after testing. The units were ordered to be sealed. It is only after correct results are received in the tests, their NoCs are renewed. 200 children walk for cancer awareness
New Delhi, November 6 "It is good to see awareness for a disease like cancer picking up pace with the people," Dikshit said at Navy Children School in south Delhi's Chanakyapuri area. The theme of the annual walk, which was first held in 2005, was addressing cancer as a lifestyle-related disease. Nearly 200 students participated in the walk organised by voluntary group Indian Cancer Support (ICS). With the number of cancer cases expected to cross 15 lakh by 2015, experts say cancer mortality can be reduced if the disease is detected early. While lung, head and neck cancer is the most common cancer among men, women are mainly affected by breast and cervical cancer. "Cancer does not mean death. The growing numbers of cancer survivors are testimony to the fact that cancer is curable when detected early," said ICS additional secretary Jyotsna Govil. -- IANS |
