West Indies in India first Test: Day 1
Chanderpaul keeps Windies in the fight
Jaideep Ghosh
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, November 6
Much of the discussion at the Ferozshah Kotla today was about the glory days of West Indies cricket. Those were the days, when the Caribbeans were a scary deal irrespective of where they played. Most acknowledged that those days were gone. But they equally willingly acknowledged that in Shivnarine Chanderpaul, the last whiff of vintage West Indies flavour still exists.

Chanderpaul was the difference between India walking all over the visitors on the first day of the first Test here. The veteran, the last man standing from the old war heroes, did what he does best - score big runs against India. His innings of 111 not out, coming off 167 balls in 236 minutes, was what carried the West Indies to 256 for five off 91 overs after India threatened to walk away with the day. This was his seventh century against India and the 24th of his 136-match Test career.

The left-hander’s assessment of the Kotla track was perfect. He realised that the much vaunted claims of a ‘sporting’ pitch was a lot of hot air as the ball tended to die right from the first hour. With the bounce being poor, all he needed to do was to keep his head down and wait for the poor deliveries, which increased in numbers as the day passed.

At the same time, he did not get bogged down like the other batsmen. On the contrary, this was one of his faster knocks, the half-century coming off 77 balls in 94 minutes and the 100 off 144 balls in 101 minutes more. Two sixes, off Ravichandran Ashwin and Pragyan Ojha, were testament to the Guyanese batsman’s conviction not to be dominated. Chanderpaul had some good support from opener Kraigg Brathwaite, the 18-year-old who belied his age with a technique that also suited the pitch and West Indies alike.

While Ojha, returning to Test cricket after nearly one year, threatened to put the young and hesitant West Indies batting in trouble from the first session, Brathwaite played practically without listing his bat. His slow innings would have been tedious to the few in the stands but in terms of a Test knock, was quite respectable, especially in the circumstances, given that his 108-run fourth wicket stand with Chanderpaul was what kept the visitors afloat.

The Indian bowling was largely the spinners, with the spinner coming on within the first hour. Ojha removed opener Kieran Powell and Kirk Edwards in quick time and then cajoled out the only mistake that Brathwaite made in the day, leading to a smart stumping by Mahendra Singh Dhoni. Ojha was the better of the two spinners. He gave the ball air, bowled at a pace that prompted indecision, if not much turn, and kept the batsmen guessing most of the time. Ashwin, making his Test debut here along with Umesh Yadav, bowled decently, but tended to spear the ball in way too fast, and not always on the same line.

Darren Bravo’s wicket was a bonus for him as the batsman tried to play a cut to a flat fast one on leg-stump, but the off-spinner would take a little more satisfaction in getting the edge of Marlon Samuels’ bat for a catch to Dhoni. The fast bowlers were playing bit roles. The ball did nothing at all and Yadav was eager but not effective. Ishant Sharma did what he could, but with the pitch deciding to play its usual placid self, it was always going to be a long day for the speedsters.

Wicket didn’t help much: Ojha

New Delhi, November 6
With the Feroz Shah Kotla pitch not offering much help to the bowlers, Indian left-arm spinner Pragyan Ojha said he stuck to the basics to scalp the three West Indies wickets on the opening day of the first cricket Test here.

Ojha was the pick of Indian bowlers as he removed the top three West Indies batsmen restricting the visitors to 256 for five at stumps on the first day.

"There was not much in the wicket for bowlers, so I stuck to one line, played with basics. I just tried to put the ball in the right areas and did not do any other thing," Ojha said at the post-match press conference.

He said his county stint in England had helped him hone his skills that came in handy today. "My last match was against New Zealand and I played county cricket after that. I honed my skills there, learnt variations and that helped me a lot. I also take advice from Anil Bhai and Bhajji whenever I get a chance," he said.

Ojha praised West Indian veteran Shivnarine Chanderpaul whose unbeaten 111 frustrated the Indians today, describing him as one of the legends of the game.

‘Team does not rely only on me’

Shivnarine Chanderpaul yet again rescued the struggling West Indies with his gritty century but the left-hander dismissed suggestions that he has been carrying the burden of propping up his team's batting department for long. Chanderpaul today scored an unbeaten 111 against India in the opening Test as West Indies reached 256 for five at the end of day one.

"That is not a fair statement. We have other quality batsmen in the team. They have done well in the series in Bangladesh. We have very capable players. I am doing what I am supposed to do and playing my role in the team," Chanderpaul, who is appraching 10,000 runs, told reporters. — PTI

Sri Lanka lead by 237

Sharjah November 6
Sri Lanka remained ahead after another attritional day in the third Test in Sharjah, but not to the extent required if they are to be confident of squaring the series. They are now left hoping for another of the famous Pakistan collapses that gave them the series the last time these two sides faced off.

By close of play on the penultimate day Sri Lanka had reached 164 for the loss of 5 wickets in their second innings giving them an overall lead of 237 runs.

Sri Lanka, aiming to level the three-Test series after losing the second Test by nine wickets in Dubai, moved to 68-1 at tea after losing skipper Tillakaratne Dilshan in their second innings.

At the break, Kumar Sangakkara was unbeaten on 43 and opener Tharanga Paranavitana was 19 not out, as Sri Lanka look to score faster and set a target for Pakistan to force a result. Pakistan lead the three-Test series 1-0 after winning the second Test by nine wickets in Dubai.

The first Test in Abu Dhabi ended in a draw. Earlier, left-arm paceman Chanaka Welegadara took his maiden five-wicket haul, finishing with 5-87 after Misbah-ul Haq missed his hundred by just 11 runs as Pakistan were dismissed for 340.

Sri Lanka had made 413 in their first innings. The lanky paceman improved on his previous best of 4-87 he took against India at Ahmedabad in 2009. But despite Welegedara's effort, it was Misbah's fighting knock of 89 which brought Pakistan closer before the 37-year-old right-handed batsman fell 10 minutes before lunch, top edging a sweep off spinner Suraj Randiv.

Misbah hit seven boundaries and a six during his 261-ball knock. He added an invaluable 47 runs for the ninth wicket with Saeed Ajmal (12 not out) after Pakistan lost Abdul Rehman off the last ball of the first over of the day, caught in the slips off Welegedara.

Brief Scores: Sri Lanka 413 and 164 for 5 (Paranavitana 66*, Sangakkara 51) lead Pakistan 340 (Younis Khan 122, Misbah 89, Azhar 53, Welegedara 5-87) by 237 runs

Ranji Trophy
Punjab manage draw against UP
Tribune News Service

Mohali, November 6
Three Punjab batsmen scored half-centuries as the home team managed to draw their opening match against Uttar Pradesh here today. Karan Goel (55), Mandeep Singh (51) and Mayank Sidhana (76 not out) put up a gritty performance as Punjab ended the final day at 280 for seven. UP got three points from the game by virtue of their first innings lead.

Starting the day at 22 for two Punjab lost opener Sarul Kanwar (23) after he had added just one run to his overnight total, raising UP's hopes of an outright win. However, left-handed Goel and Mandeep dug in to pull the side out of the rut with a 84-run stand for the fourth wicket.

Mandeep, who batted with a bandage on his chin to protect the stitches, once again played with resolve to reach his helf-century. Sudeep Tyagi broke the partnership by having Mandeep caught by Parvinder Singh but Karun found another able ally in Mayank, who remained unbeaten till the end of the match. Goel was scalped by Piyush Chawla but not before the duo had added 40 runs for the fifth wicket and then Punjab lost Bipul Sharma (19) and Gitansh Khera (10). But Punjab skipper Harbhajan Singh, who has improved a lot as a batsman, did not let the side down as he also remained not out on 24 with Mayank as Punjab ended the day at 280 for seven.

Chawla was the most successful bowler for UP picking up three wickets for 84 runs while Tyagi chipped in with two wickets.

UP had scored 596 for five in response to Punjab's 350 all out in the first innings.

Brief Scores: Punjab 350 & 280/7 in 88 overs (Karan Goel 55, Mandeep Singh 51, Mayank Sidhana 76 not out; Piyush Chawla 3/84, S Tyagi 2/30).

Not much in Mohali wicket: Raina
Tribune News Service

Mohali, November 6
Uttar Pradesh captain Suresh Raina felt there wasn't much in the Mohali wicket which prevented his team from recording an outright win against Punjab. "We tried, but there wasn't much in the wicket. The bowlers did not get much help," Raina told reporters here after the match ended in a draw.

UP got three points by virtue of their first innings lead. "They showed great attitude and real character. We dominated the proceedings for three days and that is satisfying. Hopefully, in the coming matches, we will perform even better," said Raina.

The match was picture of contrast for the two Test discards — Raina and Harbhajan Singh. While Raina scored a smashing double century, the veteran off-spinner went wicketless from his 28 overs.

However, Raina did not want to judge Harbhajan's performance by just one Ranji match after being out of the national team. "Harbhajan is a match-winner with more than 10 years of experience behind him. On many occasions, he has come up with match-winning performances. You cannot judge him by just a single performance. When he gets chance, you will see him giving his best for Team India," Raina said.

On his team's performance, Punjab's coach Vikram Rathore said he felt that his team could have got 100-110 runs more to apply pressure on UP. Rathore also felt that his bowlers need to bowl better.

Asked about how he felt the wicket had played, he said, "We were expecting a slow batting wicket. It was a slow wicket. We didn't bowl that well obviously...in the next match against Orissa, we will have greener wicket."

He informed that their key batsman Uday Kaul will be available in the next match after his return from the NCA. On Harbhajan remaining wicketless, Rathore said, "It's just a game. You don't get wickets every day. Only thing as a coach, I am expecting him to give his best, which he has."

Four players test positive
Gagan K. Teja
Tribune News Service

Sangrur, November 6
In a major embarrassment, as many as four kabaddi players, including two from Australia and one each from Canada and Germany, have tested positive for banned substances from the samples collected by NADA recently.

NADA had collected samples from 48 kabaddi players out of which the result of 18 samples has been announced and from these four samples have been found to be positive.

Giving information in this regard, Director Sports, Punjab government, Pargat Singh said that the ‘A’ samples of these players had been found positive and they have been provisionally suspended from the tournament. With foreign players failing the dope test, one cannot ignore the fact that doping is common not just in India but in other countries as well.

Talking to The Tribune, Mohan Singh, who is accompanying the UK team as an official, said doping menace has not only stormed Indian sports but was common in other countries also.

"Despite being aware of its ill effects, many youngsters in UK indulged in this practice. It certainly is a sad situation but we are trying our level best to check this menace. We conduct repeated tests during various kabaddi tournaments organised in our country.

“Before coming to India for this cup, we have tested all players for banned substances. Moreover, the players are fully aware that they could be tested by NADA anytime during the cup and therefore they are taking all preventive measures," he added.

One of the players of Canadian team on condition of anonymity said though such instances are not unheard of even in other countries, including CANADA, but still they were trying their level best to keep away from this practice.

"As circle kabaddi is a mother game of Punjabi, therefore its just few sports-loving NRIs and private clubs that are actually promoting this game in different countries. The national sports federations and the doping agencies of the respective countries therefore are not taking much interest in checking this practice.

"As doping samples of kabaddi players are not taken very regularly, players have become fearless. The doping agencies must take regular samples and take strict action against defaulters if they actually want to achieve their aim of drug-free sports," he added.

Real Madrid rout Osasuna 7-1

Madrid, November 6
Cristiano Ronaldo and Angel Di Maria engineered leaders Real Madrid's 7-1 demolition of 10-man Osasuna in La Liga on Sunday, guiding them to a tenth consecutive victory in all competitions.

Ronaldo, the world's most expensive player, paraded the Golden Boot before kickoff for the 40 league goals he scored last season, and he helped his bid to win it again with a hat-trick at the Bernabeu.

Argentina winger Di Maria set up the first three goals for Ronaldo, Pepe and Gonzalo Higuain before being carried off with what looked like a thigh injury at the start of the second half.

Ronaldo notched up his second goal from the penalty spot in the 54th when Osasuna had defender Eneko Satrustegui sent off, and he bagged his fourth league treble this season in the 57th, taking his La Liga tally to 13.

Substitute Karim Benzema wrapped up the scoring with two more goals.

Injury-hit Osasuna, who were thrashed 8-0 away to Barcelona in September, had drawn level at 1-1 in the 31st minute when Ibrahima took advantage of a quickly-taken free kick to beat Iker Casillas.

Real climbed to 28 points from 11 games, four clear of second-placed Barcelona, who can close the gap back to one point with a win at Athletic Bilbao later on Sunday (1900 GMT).

Valencia are third with 24 points after winning the city derby 2-0 at Levante on Saturday, pushing the season's surprise early pace-setters down to fourth with 23 points. — Reuters

Hosts Dempo continued its winning streak brushing aside visitors Pailan Arrows' first half challenge to register a 3-0 win in the fourth round I-league match at Tilak Ground here today.

The hosts controlled the match in the first half and held ball possession but failed to penetrate the stubborn rival defence which put up good a resistance.
