IITF: The best of Bihar— from stone to modern era

New Delhi, November 5
The Bihar pavilion at India International Trade Fair (IITF) is all set to immortalize the Mauryan art and craft.
The IITF, to be inaugurated on November 14, will focus on the Bihar pavilion. It will display art and crafts from the region, starting from the stone era to the modern age. The pavilion has accorded the pride of place the journey of art in the state. Bihar's golden era has been given its due importance by using the Mauryan period 'welcome arch' at the entry gate of the pavilion.

The Bihar Industrial Area Development Authority (BIADA), the nodal agency for the fair, has started preparations for setting up the pavilion and the exhibition area according to the theme of this year given by ITPO.

The theme of the Bihar pavilion is 'Indian Handicraft, Magic of Gifted Hands'.

"The Bihar pavilion will be decorated as per the theme and also in consonance with tradition, culture and ambience," said Umesh Kumar Singh, director of Bihar Pavilion.

"At the entrance, you can view the ancient stone-era image of art, where on the left side you can see Lord Buddha sculpted in a carved stone of 'pipal leaf' and on the right side, you can perceive a man carving the stone. This stone-carving concept is taken from the Stone Era. Stone-carving is a famous art of Patharkati, Bihar," said RC Roy, nodal officer of Bihar Pavilion.

Raja Shailesh of Mithila has been immortalized this year by the Bihar government through the usage of his statue in terracotta at the front fascia of Bihar Pavilion as it depicts the ancient history of the state.

Bihar is also famous for its many mythological stories which have been mirrored at the pavilion.

"When you enter the pavilion, you can witness the famous silk saris displayed by a mannequin. On moving ahead, a unique handicraft gallery is set up where you can view various arts and crafts of Bihar. A wide range of silk items, sikki art, wooden and bamboo art, terracotta and mithila prints are being displayed to bring the essence of Bihar," said Roy, who is also the OSD, BIADA.

Pavilion director Umesh Kumar Singh said that the theme hall will have all the details of Bihar handicraft. Showcasing the rich history and modern arts of Bihar, the pavilion will have the details of state handicraft.

"Bihar is not about having a glorious past, but it is also about a bright future. Through the new theme, we can bring back into spotlight the suppressed art prevailing in the state," added Singh.

Rape bid accused acquitted due to delayed FIR

New Delhi, November 5
A man, accused of trying to rape a woman who he claimed was his wife, has been let off by a Delhi court because of doubt about the allegation due to a 10-day delay in lodging the FIR by the victim.

"The sole testimony of the alleged victim cannot be accepted to hold the charge," said additional sessions Judge (ASJ) JR Aryan while acquitting the accused.

"There is no other corroboration and support from any other evidence or material. The prosecution charge cannot be held to have been proved," the judge said.

"The delay of 10 days in reporting the matter to the police creates a serious doubt on the veracity of the prosecution theory," the court said.

The judge said the prosecution had failed to support its allegations against G Malesh, who was accused by the woman of trying to rape her in August 2007 after confining her in his house at Sujan Singh Park here. She had also accused him of threatening her with dire consequences if she dared went to the police.

The woman attributed the delay in lodging the complaint to her fear of the accused and social stigma. The accused countered the woman's allegations, saying she got married to him in February 2007 in a temple at Shirdi in Maharashtra, and as it was an inter-caste marriage and she had two younger sisters, they had kept the marriage a secret.

Denying having made any attempt to rape her, he said that on the fateful day, the woman had come to ask him to have her pregnancy terminated. On his objection to it, she had threatened him with implicating him in a case, he said.

The woman, however, told the court that she came in contact with Malesh in 2002. He had proposed to marry her. However, she had rejected the proposal, saying that she respected him like her brother.

She alleged Malesh had called her to his house on the day and tried to rape her..- PTI

Court shows leniency to woman convict, reduces term

New Delhi, November 5
A woman, sentenced to 15-month imprisonment in a theft case, has been ordered to be freed by a Delhi court after completion of 12 months of jail term later this month.
Additional Sessions Judge Rajneesh Kumar Gupta showed leniency to the 30-year-old woman and reduced her sentence from 15 to 12 months on the ground that she has four minor children to look after.

"After keeping in view the submissions of the appellant and the nature of the offence and the fact that the appellant is a lady, the appellant is sentenced to simple imprisonment for 12 months and fine of Rs 1,500 in default simple imprisonment for 15 days. Accordingly, the impugned order on sentence is modified," said the court.

The court's order came on an appeal by convict Firoza, alias Nazma, currently lodged in Tihar Jail, against the order of a magisterial court, sentencing her to 15 months in jail for stealing Rs 1 lakh from a house in west Delhi on July 2009 and a fine of Rs 2,000.

The magisterial court had passed the order on August.

Nazma had urged the court to reduce her sentence to the period already spent in jail as she has been behind the bars since November 23, 2010.

She had appealed to the court that she has four minor children and since her husband is also in jail in some other criminal case, there is nobody to look after them. — PTI

Don’t bow to CM’s pressure: Mayor to PC
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, November 5
The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) today urged the union home ministry not to bow to the demand of the Delhi government on the issue of trifurcation of the civic agency.

"Union home minister P Chidambaram should not bend over to pressure of Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit on the trifurcation of the MCD since the issue relates to provision of civic services to Rs 1.67 crore citizens of the city," said Mayor Rajni Abbi.

Prof Abbi said the minister should take its time in studying the issue and its feasibility in the city. "Although Delhi is a state, yet it is only a city, but Dikshit is using pressure to get the clearance on trifurcation of the MCD whereas the union home ministry is willing to go into each detail legally and technically," she said.

It should see whether the proposed trifurcation would be in the interest of citizens and would help in providing civic services. It should not entail huge additional financial burden as well not add to multiplicity of authorities.

"The demarcation of boundaries should not hamper the uniform development of the city. Such issue certainly needs time to study the pros and cons in detail and its impact on the services as well as on the citizens," she said.

Prof Abbi said the way the trifurcation was being done hinted of vested interest of the state government and politicization of the MCD.

"It was all of sudden that we were informed through sources that the ministry has cleared the trifurcation and next day the news appears that Dikshit has met the UPA chairman for expeditiously clearance of trifurcation of the MCD. It just shows that the situation is different from as it is projected," added Prof Abbi.

The Chief Minister should refrain herself from such practices and the ministry be given enough time for taking biased decision in the public interest, she added.

Excess dieting, exercise weaken bones
Ananya Panda
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, November 5
Going overboard with exercise and dieting without the recommended supplementary nutrient intake could be disastrous for the health of bones, pushing youngsters closer to osteoporosis, caution experts.

The trend is more noticeable in young women who seemed to be caught in the wave of zero-size figure and in the course resort to irrational crash-diets. Even men have not escaped from this trend given the fact that over the years people in age group of 35-40 have been reporting with brittle bones.

And the cause of worry for experts is that most of the patients in the Capital report the incident after they suffer fractures, which they initially ignore as simple backache. In women, the annual incidence of osteoporotic fractures is more than the combined rates of heart attack, stroke and breast cancer. Also men report fractures at a later age, 60-70 years as compared to women. "One in three women and one in five men older than 50 years of age have osteoporosis and within 5-10 years of menopause, women tend to start losing bone density due to reduced estrogen production," said director of Indian Spinal Injuries Centre, Dr HS Chhabra.

At several hospitals, the profile of patients indicates that women report with weakened bones at an early age than men. "While patients have started coming to us at the age of 30 to 40 years, there are many who come to us as early as 20 years. This is due to overexertion without a balanced diet," said senior consultant, orthopaedics at Max Healthcare Dr Rajeev Thukral.

Among nearly 150 patients that he sees in a week, four or five are those who come with low body weight due to overworking at the gymn and poor diet. The ratio of female to male patients stands at 10 women to one man.

Apart from genetic predisposition, smoking makes women susceptible to the disease even as concerns remain for both the sections of the Indian population owing to the sedentary lifestyle and deficiency of viatmin D, which affects 90 per cent of the country's population.

With worldwide research suggesting that Indians are far more predisposed to osteoporosis than their western counterparts, the International Osteoporosis Foundation of India projects that Indians report 10-15 years early with fractures than Caucasians, thus raising concern over the silent epidemic.

The Arthritis Foundation of India projects an estimated 36 million Indians to be under the painful clout of osteoporosis by 2013. Hence, acting early is important, say experts.

"The peak bone mass starts falling after 30 years and what is important is the nature of slope of this process. In urban areas, people are inclined towards faster mode of transport. Reduced physical activity, long working hours, lack of exposure to sunlight increase the risk of osteoporosis," pointed out orthopaedics consultant at Fortis Hospital, Dr G S Bedi.

Apart from an early treatment of the disease with adequate intake of calcium and vitamin D, Dr Bedi recommended regular check-ups of all the postmenopausal women and men over 50 years of age.

Afghan refugees living in fear

Christians who fled Afghanistan and sought refuge in India, considering it to be a safe haven for people of any caste, creed and religion, have been left wondering whether their decision was correct.

The refugees have received some threatening calls. The caller had claimed to be speaking from the Afghan embassy in Delhi.

The Afghans, therefore, rushed to the Delhi Minorities Commission and narrated their plight to the Christian member of the commission AC Michael, who in turn reported the matter to the Delhi police and the Indian embassy in Kandahar.

Though Michael has assured the Afghan Christians of full security, the refugees are still afraid.

Meanwhile, an enquiry has revealed that the call was not made from the Afghan embassy.

He could be an outsider, Michael opined.

Bottles as bribe

Bribe has become an almost unavoidable practice in Delhi, it seems. Be it a common citizen or a government servant, none can get work done without paying bribes.

Getting accommodation in a police colony in Delhi can be an uphill task, especially when one does not know people who can help.

An official at the police headquarters, on the condition of anonymity, recently said that he had to give a few bottles of whisky and brandy to the person in-charge for the accommodations in a police colony. He had gifted the bottles before Divali, but the official wanted more.

Under the programme, a delegation of three members from the UK's local authority recently visited 10 NDMC and Navyug schools for a face-to-face interaction with the students, teachers and head of the schools.

Saving women from diabetes

As it is rightly said, if a woman is educated, her entire family becomes literate. This especially holds true in practicing a healthy lifestyle, the key to avert a host of diseases, including diabetes.

While people generally fail to abide by a healthy exercise and food regime, women particularly are more careless because of reluctance and ignorance. They may be conscious about their figure, but when it comes to nutrition, their performance can shame even school-going children.

To get it right, a nationwide diabetes campaign, with focus on women, is under way through a programme, Women 4 Diabetes Care.
