Out of four, just one CCTV camera works in Gurdaspur
Gurdaspur, October 29 Police sources disclose that ever since the device had been installed, incidents of chain snatching, theft and robbery have come down significantly. The corollary is that crime rate might be increasing at those places where these eagles’ eyes-as these gadgets are popularly called-are not functioning. About two years ago, the police, in collaboration with some social organisations including the local Beopar Mandal, had installed CCTVs at the Kabootri gate, Bata Chownk, Fish market and the old bus stand. All these places are heavily populated and hold strategic significance for the police. The crime rate dropped in and around these places and thieves scouted for new places. Sources reveal that infiltrators from across the border were wary of coming to these areas when these cameras were functional. All these appliances, serviced by wires, were connected to the central observation room located near the Municipal Committee Chownk which was manned 24 hours a day by a team of constables. The wires of the cameras accidentally got entangled with the passing vehicles and ever since then the cameras are not functioning. The SSP, Varinder Pal Singh, said efforts were on to purchase wireless cameras. He added that technology of these devices had become obsolete and his department is planning to get new CCTVs. “The crime rate dropped drastically when these CCTVs were operational. We need more such devices to combat crime. Like in United Kingdom, they have one camera for every 12 persons, we too need more CCTVs. We are going in for wireless CCTVs as the images generated by these gadgets is very good for police investigations,” disclosed the SSP. The cops are making arrangements to install new cameras at some strategic locations like the railway station, bust stand and departmental stores. Sources revealed that cameras installed at various places in Pathankot had also developed some defects. “When they worked we benefited immensely as crime rate decreased,” revealed a police officer. A senior police officer from Batala, where not even a single CCTV has been installed, remarked, “If we had cameras here we would have easily caught the perpetrators.” |
