SAD-BJP combine will retain power, claims Ashwani Sharma

Predicting that the SAD-BJP combine will win the forthcoming assembly polls in Punjab, the Punjab BJP Chief, Ashwani Sharma, has said the party would be according tickets to deserving aspirants and that too in a democratic manner.

The employees of the Nawanshahr, Ajnala, Nakodar, Fazilka, Bhogpur, Budladha, Gurdaspur and Batala cooperative Sugar Mills under the aegis of Sehkari Khand Mill Workers Federation and Common Cadre Sugar Federation held a protest dharna and blocked traffic here at Chandigarh Chowk to raise their voice against the alleged apathetic attitude of the State government toward their demands.

Balwinder Singh (32), a resident of Takhuchak village, was shot dead by his brother Gurmukh Singh today. Lakhwinder Singh, the second brother, had a narrow escape as he managed to hide himself in a room.

Varinder Kumar (59) working as a Muneem at Gaushala, Garhshankar, was allegedly murdered by Surinder Kumar (24) of Suranasi (Jalandhar) on the night intervening between October 26 and October 27.

BSP blocks highways over tearing of banners

Phagwara, October 28
Hundreds of activists belonging to the Bahujan Samaj Party, (BSP) headed by the local President, Lekh Raj Jamalpuri, held a demonstration and blocked vehicular traffic on National Highways near local Sugar Mills Chowk today. The BSP activists were protesting against the tearing of some banners of the party by some miscreants at various places of the town. The party installed these banners to greet the people on Vishwakarma Day yesterday.

Vehicles were stranded in jam on Phagwara-Jalandhar, Phagwara-Hoshiarpur, Phagwara-Ludhiana and Phagwara-Nakodar roads due to the blockade. The protesters were demanding immediate arrest of the miscreants. The blockade was lifted after an assurance by police officers for an early arrest of the miscreants. The police has registered a case under Section 295 of the IPC.

Predicting that the SAD-BJP combine will win the forthcoming assembly polls in Punjab, the Punjab BJP Chief, Ashwani Sharma, has said the party would be according tickets to deserving aspirants and that too in a democratic manner.

He has also made it clear that every party worker has a right to seek tickets. “Our party has a democratic set-up and everybody enjoys the right to seek party ticket,” said Ashwani Sharma.

Sharma, who was accompanied by senior BJP leaders, including SD Chugh, Vijay Sampla and Ravi Mohindru, was here to listen to the grievances of the party workers and to interact with them about the ongoing preparations for the forthcoming ‘Rath Yatra’ of the BJP stalwart, LK Advani, in the state.

Referring to the firebrand SAD (Amritsar) leader Simranjit Singh Maan’s stance against Advani’s “Rath Yatra,”

Sharma said those who were opposing the ‘Rath Yatra’ “apparently supporting the menace of corruption”. “We are well prepared to host Advani ji’s yatra,” said Sharma.

The employees of the Nawanshahr, Ajnala, Nakodar, Fazilka, Bhogpur, Budladha, Gurdaspur and Batala cooperative Sugar Mills under the aegis of Sehkari Khand Mill Workers Federation and Common Cadre Sugar Federation held a protest dharna and blocked traffic here at Chandigarh Chowk to raise their voice against the alleged apathetic attitude of the State government toward their demands.

The state President, Karnail Singh Lakhmipur, said though the government had agreed to accept their demands during the meeting held in July this year but nothing concrete had been done so far. The sugar mills employees had been demanding grade revision as per the recommendations of the Fifth Pay Commission. The sugar mills employees would intensify their protest if their demands were not met soon, he added.

Man shoots brother to death

Balwinder Singh (32), a resident of Takhuchak village, was shot dead by his brother Gurmukh Singh today. Lakhwinder Singh, the second brother, had a narrow escape as he managed to hide himself in a room.

The Patti police has registered a case under Section 302 of the IPC and 25,27,54 and 49 of the Arms Act against Gurmukh Singh.

The accused had taken some money from both of his brothers who had a commission agent (Aratah) shop in the local grain market.

Balwinder Singh and Lakhwinder Singh demanded their money. Gurmukh Singh, in a fit of rage, opened fire at his brothers. The accused fired four shots at Lakhwinder Singh but he managed to hide himself in a room.

The accused then opened fired twice at Balwinder Singh. One bullet hit Balwinder’s stomach and he died on the spot. The accused, who was a member of a Nihang organisation, managed to escape from the spot. Inspector Gurjit Singh, SHO, said the post-mortem of the body was conducted at the local Civil Hospital.

Man murdered over eve teasing

Hoshiarpur, October 28
Varinder Kumar (59) working as a Muneem at Gaushala, Garhshankar, was allegedly murdered by Surinder Kumar (24) of Suranasi (Jalandhar) on the night intervening between October 26 and October 27.

According to the police, Monika, wife of Vinay Kumar, who was also working in the Gaushala alleged that her husband went to Shahpur village to meet his relatives. One seeing her alone, Surinder Kumar teased her. She complained to Varinder Kumar and the latter warned Surinder Kumar. Irked by the warning, Surinder Kumar, under a fit of rage, assaulted Varinder Kumar with a sharp-edged weapon. At that time Monika was hiding in the nearby bushes. After murdering Varinder Kumar, Surinder Singh escaped. The police has booked the accused under Sections 302, 201 and 354 of the Indian Penal Code.

Jujhar resident killed

Hoshiarpur: Sanjiv Kumar (20) of Jujhar was allegedly murdered by Vikas, Rajat, Happy and two other unidentified persons on Thursday. Manjinder Singh and his friend Sanjiv Kumar, telephoned Sanjiv Kumar and called him to their village for some work. When Sanjiv reached their village, the aforesaid accused assaulted him with sharp-edged weapons. He died on the spot. Sources said there was old enmity between the deceased and the accused. A case under Sections 302, 324, 148 and 149 of the IPC has been registered. — OC

Akali factions clash, two hurt

Two persons were injured in a clash between supporters of Quadian MLA Lakhbir Singh Lodhinangal and Punjab Assembly speaker Nirmal Singh Kahlon at Kot Majlas village on Thursday.

The injured were identified as Vachiter Singh and Sukhjit Singh.

Lakhbir Singh Lodhinangal, aspirant from Fatehgarh Churian, claimed that the local police was harassing his supporters in a bid to support Nirmal Singh Kahlon in the coming election.

Batala SSP Gurkirpal Singh said nobody has come forward to lodge a complaint.
