Woman among 7 held in blind murder case
Our Correspondent

Hoshiarpur, November 3
With the arrest of five persons, including a woman, the district police today claimed to have solved a blind murder case of Manjinder Singh (31), within 5 hours of the occurrence of the crime.

In a press release here this afternoon, Hoshiarpur SSP Hardial Singh Mann said the accused have been identified as the wife of the victim Tejinder Pal Kaur, her paramour Harpreet Singh, alias Lovpreet, of Hussainpur (Bulhowal), Sukhjit Singh, of Sahri (Mehtiana), Jaswinder Singh, of Haderowal (Bulhowal) and Amritpal Singh, alias Deepak, of Nasrala Colony, Hoshiarpur.

SSP said Manjinder Singh, who came back to India from Dubai six months ago, was married to Tejinder Pal Kaur, of Chokha on July 9.

Deceased Manjinder Singh’s brother told the police that four persons came on two motorcycles to their house on the evening of October 31, to meet Tejinder Pal Kaur. When he inquired about them, Tejinder Pal Kaur said they were her relatives. After taking tea, they took his brother Manjinder Singh with them on some pretext and said he will return in the morning. On the next morning when his brother Manjinder Singh did not return, he tried to contact him on his mobile phone, but it was switched off.

The police informed him later that the dead body of Manjinder Singh bearing several marks of injury caused due to sharp-edged weapons had been found near Machhian village.

Tejinder Pal Kaur, confessed before the police that she was in love with Harpreet Singh before marriage. She used to talk to him on the telephone which Manjinder Singh was against. Due to this the couple developed strained relations as Tejinder Pal Kaur wanted to marry Harpreet Singh.

On October 31, Tejinder Pal Kaur called Harpreet Singh on the phone and allegedly told him if he wanted to marry her, then he should eliminate her husband failing which she would die by consuming some poisonous substance, she admitted according to the police. Harpreet Singh and the accused came to her residence at about 7 pm in the evening and allegedly gave some intoxicating substance to Tejinder Pal Kaur in his tea.

The accused then took the victim on their motorcycles to Machhian village where they allegedly assaulted an unconscious Manjinder Singh with sharp-edged weapons due to which he died on the spot. To hide his identity, they mutilated Manjinder Singh’s face. Later, Harpreet Singh informed Tejinder Pal Kaur that they had killed Manjinder Singh at 2.30 am. The police has recovered two motorcycles and weapons used in the crime from the accused.

Those returning home tomorrow are Rakesh Kumar, Sukhpal Singh, Charanjeet and Rashwinder Pal.

It was late last year that SP Singh Oberoi, a Dubai-based Indian businessman, accompanied Mohammed Yousuf, victim’s father, to the Sharjah Appeal Court and made a joint submission that the victim’s family was ready for a compromise. On February 1 this year, Mohammed Yousuf accepted the blood money in the court. In all, Rs 62 lakh (Pakistani) was paid.

Subsequently, on March 27, the Appeal Court waived the death sentence of all 10 convicts. The revised sentence was three-year imprisonment for each. Since all convicts completed their sentence on November 1, they have been ordered to be released and deported from the UAE, subject to clearance from various authorities. The Indian Consulate issued temporary passports (Out pass) within one day to four of the boys to facilitate their immediate return to India.

Amritsar, November 3
President of the Air Cargo Agents Association of India (ACAAI) Bharat Thakkar anticipated considerable rise in cargo handling at the Amritsar airport within the next five years.

Talking to mediapersons on the inaugural day of the three-day 38th annual convention of the Air Cargo Agents Association of India (ACAAI), which kicked off here today, Thakkar said the strategically located Amritsar airport would be the top gainer in the country with Pakistan granting the MFN status to India.

He said the theme for the convention, which was being held in the border town for the first time, was “Indian air cargo - Conquest of the skies”. He demanded that the government must set up an exclusive all-cargo airport in the National Capital Region (NCR) on the line of exclusive cargo airport at Nasik, near Mumbai. The Indian air cargo industry had come a long way from hiring space in a passenger aircraft to now flying freight carriers.
