The statue of the Father of the Nation, installed in the Nagar Council premises in town hall, Phagwara, is in a bad shape and has been without spectacles for the last few years.Gandhiji is recognised from the dhoti, lathi and his spectacles but the distinctive spectacles have been missing and no action has been taken to take corrective action.

The Tribune Correspondent today visited the local town hall and saw the statue laden with dust and in a state of neglect. It was observed that the statue was being cleaned only four times in a year: On the Republic Day on January 26, the second time on his death anniversary on January 30, the third time on Independence Day on August 15 and the fourth time on his birthday on October 2. Nobody has bothered about the missing spectacles of Bapu on any occasion. When The Tribune correspondent visited the site on Saturday, just one day before his birthday, no arrangements to clean the statue could be observed. An iron ladder was installed to facilitate the people, who would come to garland it on Gandhiji’s birthday tomorrow, to reach the statue.

When contacted, the Phagwara Nagar Council president, Balbhadhar Sein Duggal, said that the statue without spectacles was installed before his election as Nagar Council President. He, however, gave the assurance that arrangements would be made to to construct spectacles and make the statue wear them soon. Several prominent citizens, including freedom fighters,Congress councillors and office-bearers of the Congress never noticed the state of the statue.
