1,363 posts of teachers vacant in govt schools
Jalandhar, September 24 There are only 28 headmasters against a total of 134 sanctioned posts of headmasters in the district; 510 lecturers against a total of 813 posts; 2,500 masters against a total of 3,183 posts of masters and a total of 800 C&V teachers (classical and vernacular) when the total sanctioned posts for these teachers is 1,071. Out of the total 126 posts of principals in government higher secondary schools, only 67 are filled. While the urban areas are relatively better the greater problem lies in the rural areas. The major problem areas include Nakodar and Lohian. Responding on the issue, DEO (secondary) KK Aeri sought rationalisation as an answer to the problem. He said, “There is a dearth of teachers but shifting of 70 teachers though rationalisation, soon, might bring a positive change. The rationalisation will happen on a very logical basis. Teachers will only be shifted from places where they are surplus and only to ones where more are needed.” Science teachers, however, do not buy the argument. While they are already irked at the trend of rationalisation (and also have repeatedly talked to the DGSE about the issue) they think rationalisation only increases problems leaving a void at places where these teachers are needed. Sanjiwan Singh Dadwal, general secretary, Science Teachers Association, Punjab, says, “There is no point in a mid term rationalisation policy. Uprooting teachers who have adapted to the environment at a certain place is not right. Moreover, shifting teachers on a medical/non medical basis does not make any sense since they are appointed on the basis of the subject they teach not whether they are medical or non-medical. The government should concentrate on filling posts not shifting teachers.” |

4 days gone, caste census yet to start
Jalandhar, September 24 The process has failed to start owing to the fact that the district officials have not yet received the data of the first round of the census, which was to act as the basis of the second round. Even if the data is received on Monday, it will take a few days for the technical experts to download it and feed it into notebook PCs to be taken away by the enumerators. All other preparations, which were to be done at the local level including purchase of computers for downloading the collected data and printing of stickers to be pasted outside houses, have already been done. — TNS |
