Sikh clergy to gurdwaras: Maintain record of couples entering wedlock
Perneet Singh
Tribune News Service

Amritsar, September 26
The Sikh high priests today directed the managing committees of all the gurdwaras to maintain a record of all the couples who enter into the wedlock at their gurdwaras.

Following a meeting at the Akal Takht Secretariat here today, the Sikh clergy also issued directions that all necessary amendments be made in the Anand Marriage Act before its implementation and the Sikh MPs, rising above the party lines, should contribute towards the cause.

Interacting with mediapersons, Akal Takht Jathedar Giani Gurbachan Singh said the SGPC had formed a committee of experts to deliberate on the Anand Marriage Act and the committee had discussed the issue threadbare in its recent meetings.

The panel has recommended that amendments be made in the Act and the provision of registration of marriages under it be facilitated after implementing the amended Act. Therefore, the panel has supported the stand taken by the SGPC in 2007, which was on the same lines.

The Sikh clergy directed the managing committees of all the gurdwaras to maintain record of the couples getting wedded at their gurdwaras. “It was not being done till now, but with the changing times now there is a need to keep the record of the couples and their families. Their record should be verified by the gurdwara committee chief and granthi of the concerned gurdwara,” they added.

The Sikh high priests also took serious note of the rising instances of sacrilege of Guru Granth Sahib. “Close on the heels of one such instance at Udhampur Nalla village in Ropar, another incident of sacrilege of Guru Granth Sahib has occurred at Pilibhit in Uttaranchal. We direct Punjab CM Parkash Singh Badal to take up the matter with the Union Government and also make efforts that those perpetrating such activities are booked under Section 302 along with Section 295-A.”

The Sikh high priests have also asked the Satkar Committees, formed to ensure proper respect to Guru Granth Sahib, not to get involved in any such matter directly, but bring it to the notice of the nearest Takht, SGPC member or Secretary concerned, Dharam Parchar Committee.

In a related development, the Sikh clergy has sought full details from gurdwara committees in Malaysia about a case in which one Sarban Singh had reportedly prepared a copy of Guru Granth Sahib, having 1,490 pages and weighing 700 kg, and sold off its 70 pages in 70,000 ringets (Malaysian currency). Sarban Singh has also been warned to get back the pages that he has sold.

Similarly, NRI Surinder Singh Dhesian, whose named figured in sacrilegious ‘birs’ row, has been strictly cautioned to appear before the clergy in the next meeting.
