Amritsar, September 14
Officials from both India and Pakistan met at Attari-Wagah joint checkpost to discuss various issues and problems being faced by the railway authorities on both sides of the border.

Indian delegation was led by Divisional Railway Manager Vishvesh Chaube while the Pakistan’s delegation was headed by Divisional Superintendent Mohammad Javed Anwwar at the meeting.

An official from the Customs Department also attended the meeting.

The sources in the department here said the railway authorities took up the issue of replacing existing four-wheel bogie for goods train with eight-wheel one, which would help enhance trade between two neighbouring nations through the rail route. Existing four-wheel bogies have less capacity to carry load as compare to eight-wheel bogies.

The Indian railway authorities also urged the Pakistan authorities to increase frequency of goods train besides discussing the delayed arrivals of Samjhauta express and illegal smuggling of narcotics through trains. Anwar said the matter of operating eight-wheel bogies is with the governments and as soon as they would get the approval, they were ready to run the same. On smuggling, he said they had come about this menace only through the newspapers and they were looking at the issue and the guilty would be punished.

The custom officials said they had informed their Pakistani counterparts about the smuggling activities a number of times, yet the illegal activity continued to prosper.

Amritsar, September 14
A pilgrim reportedly entered into a scuffle with a sewadar at the Golden Temple, leading to an unpleasant situation at the holy shrine here today.

According to sources, trouble broke out when Harpal Singh, a resident of Sultanwind area in Amritsar, was standing in a queue for receiving ‘parshad’ at the exit point of the Golden Temple.
