Gurdaspur family tried for murder that never was
Asks Punjab Government to inquiry into the case
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, September 5
If allegations in a petition filed before the Punjab and Haryana High Court are to be believed, a Gurdaspur resident and his family are facing criminal proceedings for a murder that never took place.

Seeking directions to the state of Punjab for a fair and impartial inquiry through the CBI or some other independent agency, Satnam Singh has alleged that complainant Amrik Singh got a murder case registered against him and six of his family members on June 9 under Sections 302, 201 and 404 of the IPC at the Civil Lines police station, Batala, after one Jagroop Singh disappeared and a body was found.

The petitioner added that he and his family were picked up by the police and tortured. However, they were released from the illegal custody after the forensic examination of the body revealed that it was of a 40-year-old man, while Jagroop Singh was only 18.

The petitioner claimed that his cousin Gurparkash Singh was married to Paramjit Kaur, but she had an illicit relation. On May 26, Paramjit Kaur in connivance with Jagroop Singh and his family administered sleeping pills to her husband Gurparkash Singh and mother-in-law before taking away gold and cash.

He said the police till date had not carried out further investigations to find out the truth.

Taking up the petition filed through counsel Simranjit Singh, the high court has issued a notice of motion to the state of Punjab and other respondents.

Jalandhar, September 5
The Road Safety-10, a pilot project of the World Health Organisation (WHO), that the city police had claimed to launch with much fanfare has failed to take off on time.

The traffic wing of the city police even conducted trials from August 17 to 19, but the drive could not be launched as the company that was to supply alchometers and radars to the city police failed to make the delivery of these equipments.

Moreover, to train cops for handling these equipments and educate general public about the project, a three-member team of the WHO even conducted seminars in the city before the launching the project that was to be launched on September 1.

DS Dhillon, Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (traffic), admitted that the company has failed to keep its promise by delaying the deliver of 22 alchometers and 22 speed-radars.

DS Dhillon, however, maintained that the project would definitely be launched in public interest.

Besides Jalandhar, the WHO has selected Hyderabad for the launch of this pilot project.

The cities have been selected as these have the highest rate of deaths in accidents due to drunken driving and over speeding. The WHO has listed 10 cities across the globe where the project would be implemented.

The project would be launched in others cities of the country after accessing its results in Jalandhar and Hyderabad cities.
