Snake charmer held; reptile released in forest
Jalandhar, September 2 Receiving secret information that certain snake charmers were roaming in Baba Muraad Shah Mela in Nakodar for the past two days following which a team of the official lead by Nikhil Sengar, honorary Wildlife Warden, Nawanshehar, and Dr Sandeep Kumar Jain, a member of the State Wildlife Board, launched a search to nab the snake charmers. Talking to The Tribune, Sengar, revealed that after getting a go-ahead from the Chief Wildlife Warden, Punjab, he informed the Divisional Forest Officer, Phillaur, and rushed to the spot, on Thursday evening. The team could only nab a woman snake charmer, named Billo, who was displaying an Indian python in the fair. Her other group members, however, managed to give the officials the slip. Mouth of the reptile, protected under Schedule-1 of the Wildlife Protection Act, was tied with a plastic string to prevent it from attacking the onlookers, revealed Dr Jain. He further added it was a male python measuring nearly 6 feet and seemed to have been captured by the snake charmer recently as its fangs were found intact. The woman and the python were today produced before a Nakodar court this evening. The court ordered to release the python in forest while the woman was sent to jail as she failed to furnish a bail bond of Rs 50,000. The rescue team released the reptile in a forest near Garhshankar late this evening.

Technical snag hits BSNL exchange
Nakodar, September 2 According to sources, the alleged technical snag developed due to the unavailability of Air Conditioners (ACs) and the deterioration of electrical batteries available in the exchange premises. The exchange’s technical infrastructure is outdated and needs immediate upgradation. The exchange has four ACs out of which three are almost damaged and the remaining one which is working, is in need of repair. The problem has forced the BSNL landline users to shift to other private operators. Sources revealed that Malsian town had around 1,700 landline users and in the past four months, the number of users has dwindled to around 1000 only. The same was happening with mobile users. “The exchange’s technical infrastructures requires 20 degree temperature throughout the year and if temperature is not stable, Power Card Supply (PSU) and Local Line Card (LLC) often develop a technical snag and as a result the landline connections stop working,” said an official of the BSNL, requesting anonymity. In event of a power cut, the situation worsens as whole exchange goes dead because of the few minutes backup of available electrical batteries. The same is the case with the mobile tower. Shiv Shambu Gupta and Inderjit Gupta, BSNL users, lamented that from the last one year, not even for a single day did their telephone (landline and mobile) work smoothly and now they were planning to shift to other private operators. SDO Shahkot Telephone Exchange, Ram Parsad said he had already written to the higher authority about the situation of the exchange, “Three electrical batteries of Exchange and one of mobile tower has almost turned into scrap and needs immediate replacement”. In terms of manpower, the Malsian exchange has turned into a ‘one-man army’ as one employee oversees complaints and other operations of the exchange.

Bajwa bats for Sports Bill
Jalandhar, September 2 Bajwa, also the president of the Judo Federation of Punjab, said that wide-ranging changes need to be brought within the sports set-up in India. Bringing all the federations and sports bodies under the purview of the Right to Information Act is a step in the right direction, he pointed out. Even if many sports bodies, particularly those responsible for lucrative sports in India, are not taking public (i.e. government) funds, they are serving the public purpose of promoting the sport and for that purpose must fall in the ambit of the RTI, he added. Representation of sports persons within the sporting bodies is a must, even if these bodies are currently being run by administrators. I also agree with the proposal to cap the number of tenures that a person can have at the helm of affairs. Since the youth have more dynamism, younger persons should have a chance at running such bodiexs, he added. While some stakeholders want the bill to be modified slightly, for an overhaul of the system, conditions like the RTI, cap on number of number tenures as well as representation of sportspersons are essential and must remain in the final version, he said.
