Nakodar August 29 Deputy Superintendent of Police, Nakodar, Rajinder Singh and Inspector Surinder Pal Singh, said the drug peddlers were nabbed at a police ‘naka’ near Gurdwara Panj Peer at Shankar village. They were travelling on a car, which was intercepted at the naka. On search, the police found 7 kg of opium and 3 kg of charas (worth around Rs 6 lakh) in the vehicle. The DSP said the accused, identified as Sham Lal of Tajpur road in Ludhiana and Jatinder Kumar of Mahindru Mohalla in Jalandhar, were on the way to supply these drugs. During interrogation, it came to light that both the accused had a criminal past. Accused Sham Lal, was declared PO in 2000 and 2006, when he was arrested by the Jalandhar police with 10 kg and 20 kg charas, respectively. The DSP said adding that the accused was also booked under Section 223 and 234 of the IPC, when he gave slip to the Judicial custody in 2006. Sham Lal has also been booked under the NDPS Act in Kullu in Himachal Pradesh. Jatinder Kumar were booked in two cases under the NDPS Act in 2007, 2008 at Maqsoodan police station Jalandhar. The police had sought remand of both the accused for further interrogation. Nawanshahr: The police arrested a youth, identified as Vishal Chopra of Rahon, during a naka here at Phatti Basta Chowk. The police recovered 20 grams of heroin from his possession. A case under Sections 21, 61 and 85 of the NDPS Act has been registered against him. Batala: The police arrested Narinder Kumar of Mian Mohalla and Surinder Kumar of Batala with 2.7 kg of intoxicant powder. They have been booked under the NDPS Act. Nakodar: The Shahkot police arrested two persons with 4 grams of heroin today. The drug peddlers were identified as Dalwinder Singh and Baljit Singh, both residents of Shahkot. A case under Sections 22, 61 and 85 of the NDPS Act has been registered. |

Batala, August 29 According to the deceased’s father Balwinder Singh of Pabbarali village, the in-laws tortured Harmanpreet since her marriage with Army man Manpreet Singh of Nasirke village three years ago. He suspected that his daughter died of electric shock. The in laws were not happy with Harmanpreet as her family had paid less dowry. The police booked the in-laws after getting the postmortem report. Pickpocket held Tarn Taran: Rajji (42), a resident of Faridkot, a pickpocket was nabbed from Amasawaya mela here today. The city police has registered a case under Section 379 of the
IPC. Girl drugs parents; flees with cash, gold Tarn Taran , August 29 The police has registered a case under Sections 380, 328 and 120 B of the IPC against six persons including Parminder Kaur.The case has been registered on the statement of girl’s father Kartar Singh (50). According to Kartar Singh, Parminder had developed a relation with Sawar and wanted to marry him. Kartar Singh alleged that when they woke up late in the morning the family felt dizzy. He saw his daughter missing from the residence and a cash of Rs 20,000 and some gold ornaments were missing. — OC |

Surjit academy win all-India hockey tourney
Jalandhar, August 29 It was a neck to neck fight in which the Surjit Hockey Academy boys took the lead and routed Shivalik Public School, Mohali by 3-1 in the final match. While in the semi-finals Surjit Academy boys defeated Delhi XI in a one-sided match by 7-0 goals. The players, all students of the local Government Senior Model School, Ladowali Road bagged the S.N. Vohra trophy and Rs 20,000 cash. The players would now gear up for the upcoming prestigious Junior Nehru Hockey tournament to be held at Delhi in the second week of October. Talking to The Tribune, Coach Gurdev Singh said this victory was crucial as our boys would now prepare for the Nehru Hockey. “It was a do or die situation for our boys as last year they had ended up runners-up. This victory had boosted the morale of the boys and I am sure it will yield good results ahead”, he added. The coach also said that although back counting has begun for the Nehru cup but they had enough time to practice on their weak parts of the game. “During this period we will concentrate more on the attacking capacity, defense and forward moves of the game”, he maintained. Captain of the team, Samsher Singh who posted highest goals in the tournament was elated discussing the victory, “I posted fourteen goals in the tournament and it was all due to the regular practice sessions at the Olympian Surjit Hockey Astroturf that we played so well. The Shivalik School boys also played good but we gave them a tough fight”, he said. Another player, Inderjit Singh who had posted a crucial goal in the final match said we competed with the best of the teams. “Leading hockey teams from across the country had participated in this tourney. Along with our coach, we picked up the best moves of the rivals. It was a good platform for all of us”, he said with a smile on his face. The players also added that they would give their best in the upcoming Nehru Cup. “We have set our eyes on this tournament. This is one such tourney for which we prepare and practice right from day one. And we will surely emerge winners in this tournament too”, they quipped.
Rural sports tourney begins Nawanshahr, August 29 As many as 700 players from the five blocks of the district are taking part in different sports and athletics events in the tournament being organised by the district Sports Department under the Panchayat Yuva Kreeda aur Khel Abhyan. The tournament would conclude on August 31, informed Kartar Singh Sehmbi, District Sports officer. |
