Three women among seven hurt in clash
Tarn Taran, August 23 A case under section 307, 323, 148, 149 of the IPC besides 25, 27, 54, 49 of the Arms Act has been registered against nine accused. The accused have been identified as Baljit Singh, Darshan Singh, Annu, Harpal Singh, Lalli, Kashmir Singh, Rubal, Manjinder Singh and Beer Singh. The injured have been identified as Avtar Singh, Tarsem Singh, Kuldeep Singh and Jaspal Singh, Manjit Kaur, Manjit Kaur and Miao. The clash took place when the two groups had gathered to reach a compromise over an old dispute. An altercation led to one of the accused Darshan Singh allegedly open fire on Tarsem Singh. He also shot at Avtar Singh, Kuldeep Singh and Jaspal Singh. He then threw stones at the opposing group leaving three women injured. No arrests have been made so far. — OC |

Farmer loses life during protest march
Amritsar, August 23 According to available information, Dheer Singh fell down unconscious this evening while the procession was moving on the Albert Road here. He was immediately rushed to Guru Nanak Dev Hospital where the doctors declared him “brought dead”. Satnam Singh Pannu, president of Kisan Sangharsh Committee, Punjab, alleged that the state government is responsible for this loss. “We demand a compensation amount of atlesat Rs 10 lakh and a job to one of his family members on compassionate grounds”, he said. Dheer Singh, a marginal farmer belonging to Gaggowal village in Ajnala, is survived by four daughters and a son. |

Flood victim’s body fished out
Hoshiarpur, August 23 The body was handed over to his family members after getting the post-mortem examination conducted. Deputy Commissioner Depinder Singh along with a few other government officials met family members of Yashpal to condole his death. He announced an ex gratia of Rs 1 lakh to kin of deceased. Mukerian Sub Divisional Magistrate (SDM), Rahul Chaba, said standing crop in more than 3,300 acres in 12 villages of this subdivision had been damaged due to the flooded Beas. More than 20-foot breach in a protection bundh between Mehtabpur and Koilan was plugged with sandbags yesterday. Dasuya SDM, PP Singh, said advance guide bundh, between Miani and Mewa villages, developed 100-foot wide breach due to the flood. Work is going in on a war footing to plug the breach. Depinder Singh along with SSP Rakesh Aggarwal visited flood-affected villages in the Mukerian and Dasuya subdivisions to take stock of the situation. He directed the officials concerned to rehabilitate the flood-affected families at the earliest. Dharna Activists of various social and religious organisations and political parties came out in support of Anna Hazare today. Hundreds of activists led by Kumar Saini staged a dharna in front of Congress MP Santosh Chaudhary’s residence at Piplanwala. The activists also burnt effigies of the UPA government, took out protest rallies and held demonstration at Hoshiarpur, Hariana, Garhdiwala, Mukerian, Dasuya, Tanda, Mahilpur and Garhshankar towns. Stone laid Ivy Hospital in Mohali will open 135 bedded hospital at Hoshiarpur. The foundation stone of the hospital was laid by CEO and Medical Director of Ivy Gurtej Singh and Kanwaldeep, respectively. |

Woman succumbs to burns
Jalandhar, August 23 Sources in the police revealed that Parveen Kaur sustained 75 per cent burns when a kerosene stove burst while she was cooking food last night. Parveen, her husband Kulwinder Singh and their children were at home when the incident occurred, according to the SHO Kartarpur Police Station. The injured was rushed to the civil hospital last night but she breathed her last at 3 am this morning, he said. The police has initiated inquest proceeding in this regard The police is also working on various other theories to detect the case. |

32-year-old man’s body found
Nakodar August 23 Villagers informed the police about the body today. The deceased has been identified as Balwant Singh, a resident of Daulatpur village. The police registered a case under Section 174 of the CrPC. The body has been sent for a post-mortem examination. According to the relatives of the deceased, Balwant had left home three days ago for some personal work but didn't return. |

NRHM strike enters 16th day
Tarn Taran, August 23 Malwinder Singh, district president of NRHM Employees Association, Dr Dilbag Singh and other leaders of the organisation said the organisation had been demanding regularisation of services besides enhancing in their salary. They said they were being discriminated against as they were given meagre salary as compared to other officers of the same rank working under the same circumstances and conditions.

Gang of robbers busted, four nabbed
Amritsar, August 23 The police managed to nab four persons of the gang from near Dr Vidya Sagar Mental Hospital, while one accomplice managed to escape from the spot. They were identified as Amandeep Singh alias Aman, Hardip Singh alias Deepa, Sukhdip Singh alias Bunty, Sandeep Singh alias Gappo all resident of village Devidaspur here and Ranjit Singh alias Rana, a resident of Mohalla Bajigaran Nawi Abadi, Rattan Singh Chowk. Sandeep Singh who had managed to dodge the police net is son of Harpal Singh, the sarpanch of village Devidaspura. He is said to be the kingpin of the gang. During the investigations, the police recovered two sharp-edged weapons, besides five computers from their possession. The computers were stolen from a school situated in village Devidaspura. Harpal Singh, the sarpanch is learnt to be the chairman of the same school. Dilbagh Singh, in charge of the Faizpura police said that a case under Section 399 and 402 of the Indian Penal Code has been registered at Civil Lines Police Station in this connection. He said the accused were presented in the district court which sent them to two-day police remand. Dilbagh Singh said as per preliminary investigations, Sandeep was involved in many cases registered at the Jandiala police station under Amritsar rural police district. He said further investigations were under progress and more cases are likely to be solved as a consequence of the arrest of these robbers. |
One arrested with 100 gram smack
Jalandhar, August 23 Acting on a tip-off, the police laid a trap and nabbed the suspect, Darshan Singh, while carrying the narcotic near local ISBT this evening. In charge of anti-gangster wing, Sukhjit Singh revealed that on a tip-off about Darshan Singh’s involvement in drug trafficking. The police had been chasing the accused for the last couple of months but finally succeeded in nailing him this evening. The accused Darshan Singh was nabbed by the police when he reached the Jalandhar bus stand and was trudging towards a transport company’s office allegedly with the contraband, according to the in charge. A case under the provisions of the NDPS Act has been registered against the accused at police station Division No- 7. The police apprehend that the accused may make some major disclosures during the interrogation. He will be produced before a local court tomorrow, Sukhjit Singh claimed. |

Heavy effluents being discharged by industrial units
Amritsar, August 23 The reports of water
samples collected by the board from Patiala revealed that about 10 industrial units, a majority of them textile units,
situated on Majitha road were discharging the effluents consisting of heavy chemicals in open drains. The resultant environmental damage was highly dangerous for the nearby residents. The erring units which were throwing hazardous waste in the open include: Kwality Pharmaceuticals pvt Ltd, village Naag kalan, Raghav Processors pvt ltd, M S G Processors Pvt Ltd -all situated on Majitha road and RK Woollens Pvt Ltd, village Bal Sachinder, Ajnala Road. Besides, Shiv Shankar Fabric Pvt Ltd
and K Tex Fabrics Pvt Ltd, both situated on Majitha road, failed to instal air-purifying instruments for pollution caused by the pet cock being used in the boilers in these industries. According to P S Sidhu, senior environmental
engineer said these units also failed to take proper initiatives for the management of the hazardous waste. He said the department also found various other anomalies during
the raids. He said that those found guilty would face stern action for not complying to the norms. |
