Downpour leaves roads in a mess
Jalandhar, August 14 Potholes could be seen on the Nakodar road, Pratap Bagh road, Gujja Peer road, Pathankot road, Adda Hoshiapur road, Kapurthala road, Kishanpura road, railway station road and bus stand road. The state president of Pendu Mazdoor Union, Tarsem Peter, said the roads have been damaged as they were not prepared well. The damaged should be repaired at the earliest, he demanded. Mayor Rakesh Rathour said, “Usually portions of some roads get damaged after heavy rains, but the condition of the roads in the city is much better as compared to those located in other cities. The damaged roads will be repaired soon.” He said he would inquire about the quality of roads. Interestingly, the mayor, who travels regularly on the badly-damaged Gujja Peer road to reach his factory located near Pathankot Chowk from his residence in Deen Dayal Upadhaya Nagar, admitted that the quality of the road was substandard. This road had started damaging two months ago and the recent rains aggravated the situation. A warning had already been issued to the contractor concerned and an appropriate action would definitely be initiated against him, he assured. |

Junglee hero’s Jalandhar connection
Jalandhar, August 14 Raj Kapoor and Shammi Kapoor were among the celebrities who had been photographed shaking hands with the then owner Gurcharan Singh. Generations of Jalandhar foodies were a witness to this rich legacy. Gurpartap Singh, grandson of Gurcharan Singh and the present owner of King Kulfi, says his grandfather was the cousin of Rajendra Kumar, so he brought along his friends in the Kapoor family regularly to our place. “It is a great loss. My grandfather was great friends with the Kapoor family. He has told me countless stories of Shammi Kapoor. He had visited our eatery fresh after the release of Junglee during a trip to Jalandhar. He also attended my father’s wedding in 1981 along with Rajendra Kapoor, Shashi Kapoor and Pran and also danced a lot,” Gurpartap says. “He danced according to his own wishes and never let anyone teach him his moves,” he adds. Sadly, the photographs of the Kapoors no more adorn the walls, “Since they were damaged when we got the walls painted. After the death of my grandfather we have also lost touch. But everyone in our family remembers those days fondly.” |
