Amritsar, August 12 Revealing this Kuldeep Nayyar, president, Hind-Pak Dosti Manch, along with activists of Folklore Research Academy and Punjab Jagriti Manch, said the two-day affair would start with a seminar on Indo-Pak relations on August 13 at Punjab Natshala. In the evening, Kewal Dhaliwal-directed play ‘Yatra-1947’ would be enacted at the venue. On August 14, a cultural programme would be organised at Attari grain market in which famous singers including Harbhajan Mann, Shaukat Ali, Mubark Ali, Sultana Noora and Joti Noora and Ali Brothers were likely to enthrall the audience. Selected personalities from Indian and Pakistan delegations would move to Zero Line at the border to light candles to mark Independence Days of both countries. Nayyar pointed out that though the relations between India and Pakistan are not yet cordial, but still there are people and organisations on both the sides which are striving for peace and improving the relations between the two neighbouring countries. Nayyar said the South Asia Free Media Association (SAFMA) is also celebrating a similar Hind-Pak Dosti Festival on the other side of the border. A seminar on India-Pakistan relations would also be held in Lahore on August 13 and candles would be lit at the Zero Line on August 14 on Pakistan side. A delegation of five members headed by eminent journalist Chanchal Manohar Singh and would leave for Lahore on August 13 to participate in the seminar. |

Amritsar, August 12 Confirming this, Dr S.S. Shergill, Principal, Government Medical College, said the inquiry committee would be headed by Dr Jaswant Rai, Head of the Department of Pharmacology, with Dr J.S. Chahal from the Department of ENT and Dr Surinder Pal, hostel warden, as members. According to information, the students of senior classes, including IInd and IIIrd year, were gathering on the hostel premises, where newly admitted students of MBBS are residing, to rag them. However, the college authorities got a wind of this and they immediately swung into action. Dr Shergill said they had received a complaint of harassment from several students on the basis of which an inquiry had been initiated. He said students had been suspended for the time being and further action would be taken only after the inquiry report. |

Commissioner finds 102 employees absent
Jalandhar, August 12 The inspection was conducted at 9.15 am in the offices of the District Transport Officer, Tehsildar Jalandhar-I and II, District Food and Civil Supplies Controller and District Development and Panchayats Officer. On reaching the tehsil complex, Verma got the entry gate bolted. His staff took possession of the attendance registers and the movement register of the offices concerned. In the office of the Secretary, Regional Transport Authority, nine employees were found absent. In the DTO office, again nine employees were found absent and the attendance of one employee had not been marked since August 9. When Verma visited the Patwar Khana of Jalandhar I and II on the first floor of the District Administrative Complex, he found all the 20 patwari offices locked. In the office of the District Food and Civil Supplies Controller, 12 employees were found absent. Nineteen employees of the office of the District Development and Panchayat Officer were found to be absent. Verma has written to the Secretary, Transport, Financial Commissioner, Rural Development, Secretary, Food and Civil Supplies, Director, Treasuries, and other Heads of Departments to take strict action against the delinquent employees. He has asked the Deputy Commissioner to take action against 42 employees of his office, SDM office, tehsil office and
patwaris who were found absent during the inspection. Verma has issued show cause notices to the Tehsildar and Naib-Tehsildar concerned. He has issued directions to the Deputy Commissioner to conduct such surprise inspections on his own in future. Verma said the purpose of surprise inspection was to ensure that the government employees come to the office in time and serve the public diligently. He said such surprise inspections would be conducted in future also. |

Amritsar, August 12 He was handed over to the airport police authorities, who registered a case under Sections 420 and 120-B of the IPC against him. During investigations he revealed the name of a Jalandhar-based travel agent Manjit Singh, who facilitated his visa and ticket for going to Italy. Neeraj Kumar, SHO, airport police station, said Bakhashish was deported by the Embassy officials at Italy, who found the documents and information, given by Manjit to procure a visa for Bakhashish Singh, incorrect and fake. He said on his deportation Bakhashish Singh was handed over to the police. He said the police arrested Manjit from Jalandhar today and produced him in court, which remanded him in a one-day police custody.

A case under Sections 18, 61 and 85 of the NDPS Act has been registered against him. The DSP, Kulbir Singh Sandhu, told mediapersons here today that the police on a tip-off held the naka and arrested Mukhtiar Singh, travelling in his Santro car, and seized the opium. The police team was led by SHO, Bhikhiwind, Sukhdev Singh, while DSP, Bhikhiwind, Dilbag Singh supervised the operation. Mukhtiar Singh had brought the opium from Rajasthan.
