Two youths drown
Solan, August 12
Manish Kumar Two students of Sri Guru Gobind Singh College, Sector 26, Chandigarh, today drowned in the Kaushlaya Khud, near Parwanoo, where they came for a picnic. Manish Kumar (21) and Yashwant Kumar (19) died while two others, Avneet Saini and Anurag, survived and were safe, said the police.

Councillors have no time for city heroes
Chandigarh, August 12
Davinder Singh Sandhu and Jai Kanta Sandhu, parents of Second-Lieutenant Rajeev Sandhu of the Assam Regiment, read the name of their son engraved on the Martyrs’ Pillar at the Terraced Garden in Sector 33 of Chandigarh on Friday. He was awarded the Maha Vir Chakra, the country’s second-highest award, posthumously for Operation Pawan in Sri Lanka in 1998 It seems that councillors of the municipal corporation (MC) are too busy to spare time to pay homage to martyrs’ from the city. Only 13 or of the 36 councillors turned up for the inaugural function of the Martyrs’ Pillar at the Terraced Garden in Sector 33 here today.

Central Club gets eviction notice

One of the oldest clubs in the city, Central Club at Sector 9, is on the way out, with the estate office today issuing an eviction notice to the club. The notice was issued for default in lease money payment since 2000 and misuse of premises, including subletting to private parties.

Traffic diversions on Independence Day

Le Corbusier’s architectural wonder Chandigarh is set to shed its image of a stopover destination for the tourists bound for Himachal Pradesh and other states. In a development that would go a long way in developing the city as a tourist hub, the Union Ministry of Tourism has proposed a tourist circuit for the city interlinking major tourist attractions to hold the tourists for more than one day.

Panel to redress grievances of landowners

The State of Haryana today agreed to constitute a high-powered committee to redress grievances of landowners who had challenged the acquisition of 200 acres of land in Saketri village. Following the stand of the state, the Punjab and Haryana High Court Bench, comprising Justice Jasbir Singh and Justice Augustine George Masih, today disposed of the bunch of 35 petitions challenging the acquisition process.

The social welfare department has provided financial aid to 13 families in the district and approved another 19 cases for assistance under the Rajiv Gandhi Family Insurance Scheme.

Rs 2.5 lakh stolen from car

Vashisth Kumar Goyal of Gurgaon reported to the police that unidentified person stole a bag containing Rs 2.5 lakh and other documents from his car, which was parked in the parking lot of CMC in Sector 17. Similarly, Vijay Kaushal of Sector 27 reported unidentified youths stole her purse containing Rs 3,000, a cell phone and other documents from her car in the parking lot of Sector 27.
