DÉJÀ VU
New Delhi, August 12 This was the scene on the city roads after a 20-minute heavy rain this morning, leading to traffic jams with vehicles wading their way amidst mini-pools reported from hundreds of stretches in the city. In one of the heaviest rains of the season today, the office goers had a harrowing time waiting for transportations on certain roads stretching to over an hour. According to the traffic police, there was hardly a road in the city that did not face traffic problem. Some of the worst affected roads were from Akshardham to ITO, Dhaula Kuan to Airport, ITO to Connaught Place and Ring Roads. Rajouri Garden, Mehrauli, DND flyover, Ashram, New Friends Colony, Saket, Daryaganj, Jama Masjid, Kashmere Gate were other affected areas. "The situation was so bad in some stretches that pedestrians were able to move faster than people in cars. Waterlogging and breaking down of vehicles on roads led to traffic jams. We are helpless before the MCD. It's their job to see that water does not collect on the roads. Despite assurances, these people do nothing and the story is the same every time it rains," said a traffic official, blaming the MCD for all the woes. However, this was no consolation for commuters who feared the worst while leaving houses in the morning. "I was expecting jams today but not like this. Two-wheelers, which people parked under Akshardham flyover, blocked the entire road resulting in long jam on the UP link road. Why can't the traffic police move them out or at least see to it that they do not block the road," said Mamchand, a Noida resident on his way to Cannought Place this morning. "I had gone to drop my sister to the airport in the morning and it took us close to one and a half hours to reach there from Nehru Place," said Randeep Ghosh. The hardships on the roads were not limited to morning alone. The situation was the same in the evening. Heavy traffic was reported in various parts of the city. |
Land Compensation Row
Noida, August 12 At Sadullapur near Badalpur, a farmers' panchayat decided to file more petitions, requesting quashing of land acquisition. "Without a court order, Authority officers do not agree for negotiations," said Surinder Bhatti, a farmers' leader. Panchayats were also held at Amnabad, Jewar and Dankore areas in Greater Noida and Gijhode in Noida. At all these panchayats, the thrust was on filing more petitions before August 17, when a larger bench of court is expected to hear the land acquisition cases of the twin cities of Noida and Greater Noida. "Farmers are against an Amendment Bill passed by the UP government regarding reclaiming the acquired land by farmers in case it is not developed for a long time. As per the Bill, farmers will not get back the acquired land even if it is not developed for years. This is an anti-farmer amendment," said Virendra Dhada, a Congress leader. The UP government on Thursday passed an Amendment Bill in the Assembly. According to the Bill, land once acquired cannot be reclaimed by the farmers even if it is not developed. Farmers have threatened to challenge the amendment in the court. The issue has created uncertainty around the City Centre project in Noida. On Thursday, farmers filed a petition in the Allahabad High Court, demanding their lands back as they were not developed for 36 years and recently allotted to private builders. The farmers claim that as per the Act, any land which is not developed within five years of its acquisition could be reclaimed by the farmers. Meanwhile, at Patwari, around 100 farmers signed the pact and accepted the hiked compensation. With this, the total number of farmers in the village who have signed the pact rose to around 900. |
