Police pulls out all the stops for I-Day security
New Delhi, August 7 According to a sub-inspector who was on duty in the area, their job is not only to make their presence felt but also to keep an eye on any suspicious person moving in the area. Besides, the policeman develops a rapport with the locals so that they feel obliged to assist the police in its fight against terrorism. "The Prime Minister would be addressing the nation merely a kilometer from here on August 15 and any untoward incident in this area would not only put Delhi police in a poor light but also the whole country. After the recent Mumbai blasts, Delhi police is not taking any chance and this area is being completely combed," said the official, adding that not only all the hotels, motels, guesthouses and restaurants are under the scanner even the rickshaw pullers and vendors in the area are being asked to keep their eyes and ears open and report any suspicious object or person. Meanwhile, a senior Delhi police official said that security is not only limited to the Red Fort and Jama Masjid areas but it extends to the entire Capital. "Though the coordination meetings with various security agencies and the police of neighbouring districts were held in the past two weeks, starting tomorrow up to August 15, you would see higher police presence on the roads and sensitive places, including railway stations, markets, malls and Metro stations. The entire police force would be busy securing the city," said an Additional DCP. According to him, intensive drives for verification of tenants, servants, guesthouses, secondhand scooter and car dealers, cyber cafe users, cycle sellers are being carried out across the Capital to thwart any terror attempt. More than 10,000 Delhi police officials would be deployed in the Red Fort and the surrounding area. Army and NSG commandos will make the area totally safe. "Last year we had installed 30 CCTVs in and around the roads leading to the Red Fort and this time it is bound to be more than 50. Quick Reaction Teams, SWAT and Vajra will be deployed on the D-day. The area will be no-fly zone during the function," said the official. The Delhi police has also intensified checking on the borders and the traffic police is likely to issue more challans in the coming week. |
Farmers differ on agreement
Greater Noida, August 7 Several farmers of Patwari village, including Khem Chand Sharma, Dharmendra Sharma, Jai Yadav, Mahinder Sharma and others also participated in the panchayat. They said they, too, disapproved the settlement which they claimed was executed by pressuring the select committee members. Presence of MLA DP Yadav at the meeting itself speak of how the agreement might have been inked," said a farmer from Dushyant Nagar. Farmers from Patwari, Bisrakh, Roza, Jalalpur, Khanpur, Itheda, Haibatpur, Saini, Saddulapur and Chipiana participated in the panchayat. At another panchayat, a few hundred farmers from over a dozen villages gathered at Badal Pur, the home village of UP Chief Minister Mayawati. Here the farmers were in favour of asking for policy changes rather than concentrating on land compensation. They all wanted that till the new policy was approved by Parliament, there should not be any acquisition of land. Farmers from Badalpur, Dujiana, Kamrala, Dhoom Manikpur and other villages participated in the panchayat. Some of those who spoke on the occasion included Virendra Guddu, Raje Chauhan, Mahinder Bhatti and Surinder Bhatti. All farmers at the panchayat disapproved the Patwari village settlement. Meanwhile, Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) today held a rally at Jewar. Around 5,000 villagers participated in the rally. The rally was addressed by RLD leader Jayant Chaudhary, son of RLD chief Ajit Singh. "Farmers were being cheated by the state governments by forcible acquisition of land using urgency clause without paying adequate compensation to them. Now, under the new policy draft which has been put online by the Central government, farmers will get adequate compensation. However, there is a need for some amendments in the draft policy before it is tabled in Parliament for approval," said Jayant Chaudhary. |
Janata Party chief’s house attacked
New Delhi, August 7 Swamy is out of country and his daughter was present in the house at the time of the incident reported around 5 pm and it has registered a case under section 427 and 451 of IPC against unknown persons. While the police refrained from calling the protestors Congressmen, Swamy has alleged that the protestors were Congress workers angry with one of his recent articles against Muslims. "Rowdy Congress persons break into my Nizamuddin compound (and) destroy my garden. Police have arrived," wrote Swamy on twitter. According to information, more then 20 people had come to A-77, East Nizamuddin residence of Swamy and after shouting slogans against him, some of them jumped into the house. However, the police was informed and the agitators soon left after 10-15 minutes. "They were shouting anti-Swamy slogans and I cannot say if they were Congressmen or some others," said a police official. Security has been put around the house after the incident. Swamy has recently written an article in a national daily, hinting that voting rights should be taken away from the Muslims in this country, said an official. |
Kirti Nagar Metro link to cut fares, time
New Delhi, August 7 Due to this link, the cost of travel will come down by more than 50 per cent in some instances. For example, the present fare between Punjabi Bagh and Kirti Nagar is Rs 21. The same will come down to Rs 10 after the opening of this link. Similarly, the fare from Ashok Park Main to Ramesh Nagar is Rs 22 and it will decrease to Rs 12 after the commencement of services on this corridor. The traveling time of the commuters will also come down by almost 50 per cent in many cases. For example, commuters trave lling from Dwarka to any destination on Lines 1 and 5 will be conveniently able to use the interchange facilities at Kirti Nagar and Ashok Park Main and reach their destinations. At present, they have to go all the way to Rajiv Chowk and then to Kashmere Gate to reach the same destinations. The opening of this stretch will also help a lot in decongesting the busy Rajiv Chowk and Kashmere Gate interchange stations as the commuters travelling on Lines 1, 3 and 5 won't have to come to these stations to change trains. DMRC managing director E. Sreedharan inspected this section on Friday and expressed satisfaction about the work on the stretch which is expected to open soon after obtaining the safety clearance from the Commissioner For Metro Rail Safety (CMRS). The construction work of the 3.3-km stretch has been completed and trial runs are in progress since July 14. |
Civic agencies to submit details on CAG report
New Delhi, August 7 Senior officials in the Delhi government said they would prepare a detailed response on the findings of the CAG as they had done in the case of the Shunglu Committee, which had also rapped the city government on various counts. The agencies involved in the city infrastructural development projects related to the games like construction of flyovers, beautification of roads, streetscaping, etc. include the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), New Delhi Municipal Council, Delhi Development Authority , Delhi Jal Board and Public Works Department. "A complete report will be compiled on the CAG report consisting of detailed replies from the involved bodies and agencies," said a senior Delhi government official. Though the agencies have earlier also submitted their replies on the Shunglu Committee, they have been asked to include point-wise details on the objections raised by the CAG. "We had already given all the information that was asked by the Delhi government but now if again they want some explanation, we will soon submit the same," said Subhash Arya, Leader of the House in the MCD. Dikshit has said that the government is waiting for the report to reach the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) which is free to call any official for questioning. "All I can assure you is that when the CAG report goes to the PAC, in accordance with the well-established practice, whatever departments are asked to come before the PAC and answer any query,” said Dikshit. |
Anna’s supporters burn copies of ‘black bill’
New Delhi, August 7 The supporters gathered in huge numbers and raised slogans against the government. They were surrounded by the Delhi police personnel. Though Anna Hazare was not present, the agitation was led by social activist Arvind Kejriwal. As the government version allegedly protects corrupt people and punishes complainants, Anna Hazare and his team have announced to run a statewide awareness campaign on the Jan Lokpal Bill. They have expressed their dissatisfaction with the bill that has kept out the Prime Minister and the judiciary from the ambit of the Lokpal. However, Hazare has expressed hope that the UPA leaders would show maturity and accept the Jan Lokpal Bill as drafted by the civil society. Recalling the events that finally led to Hazare's fast in April this year, Kejriwal said the civil society group lobbying for a strong anti-corruption bill went unheard despite the fact that it had approached all the political parties. He said even the upcoming agitation of August 16 could be avoided if the government dealt with the issue properly. Team Anna has also issued an appeal to fellow citizens to burn the copies of the bill all across the country without resorting to violence. "Our fellow members will burn the copies of Lokpal Bill in Ghaziabad and other parts of Delhi, terming the government draft 'anti-poor and anti-dalit'. We burnt the copies in Bihar yesterday to protest against the 'lack of teeth' in the bill introduced in Parliament on Friday," said one of the activists at Jantar Mantar. |
Strong legal framework must for euthanasia: Experts
New Delhi, August 7 However, passive euthanasia is not a new phenomenon with doctors already practising it-discharging the patient under LAMA (the patient leaving against medical advice)-at times due to the family's inability to bear the fast-climbing medical expenses. However, with guidelines in place, the whole dimension would become clear, pointed out experts. Nonetheless, ruling out financial constraint as a ground for euthanasia, they said in such cases involving poor patients, the state should bear their expenses. While flagging off several concerns, including heading towards a 'slippery slope' towards involuntary euthanasia post-legalising voluntary euthanasia or assisted suicide, they said the patient has to be brain dead, in vegetative state or suffering from terminal illness, one that has no road to recovery. Heading towards a pragmatic approach for tackling the complex issues, revolving around the moral, ethical, social, cultural dimensions of the whole subject, legal remedy is a must and with precedents of laws existing globally in nations, such as Australia and Switzerland, experts found a consensus on most of the areas. While the death-plea can come from the patient, surrogates (family member, friend but an Indian citizen), a committee, comprising the treating physician, neuro-specialist and psychiatrist, social activist, family member and a religious guru, would be entitled to decide. Contrary to the strong public argument coming in favour of euthanasia or mercy-killing, 'suffering' should not be the basis of the plea for euthanasia though it could be considered in the advanced directives, came out a consensus from one of the five sub-groups engaged in suggesting guidelines for a euthanasia law that could spell out a 'dignified death' of the terminally ill. However, with India where 66 per cent of population is still illiterate, it remains to be seen whether people here are actually prepared to accept euthanasia. |
DU students preparing for college fests
New Delhi, August 7 Apart from the more popular performing arts societies like dramatics, dance, choreography, western and Indian music, the other unconventional societies will also be holding auditions. If you can paint or write well, organize well, if you can get access to the best documentaries for screening or you are Some of these societies have churned out great dancers, actors, writers "I was a western singer at the school choir as well. It has been my dream to be a part of Lady Shri Ram College's western music society since I heard them perform, 'Leonardo's flying machine' at a completion a couple of years ago. Students from western music in DU are usually part of bands. I just aim to sing my heart out," said Shelly Saikia, a BA programme fresher at LSR. "The likes of Kabir Bedi, Amitabh Bachhan and others have been associated with Kirori Mal's theatre society over the years. To be in KMC's theatre means that one is already on the journey to be a successful actor. The auditions will take place within a week," said a proud Kishan Vasudev, a member of the society. Within a few weeks, the societies will have selected their members and practices for college competitions will begin round the clock. The demanding schedules of these societies are tiring, yet students term this time the best during their college years. The only colleges lagging in the race now are colleges like Hindu who are still not sure of their admissions this year. |

in Rewari
New Delhi, August 7, 2011 Initially a missing complaint was registered, but a kidnapping case was later registered on July 30. His head was found a yard away from his body while his mobile phone was lying about 10 feet away. His car is still missing," said a police official, adding that it seems like a case of personal enmity and hatred. Srikant's father Sheeshpal Singh who works as section officer at the ministry of social justice and empowerment identified the body. Srikant had got married in January this year. Meanwhile, the police is hunting for the criminals and working on some leads. |

Chatterati
Fashion and glamour go hand in hand and if it is Delhi where the fashion shows are held, then trying to rope in the powerful political clan is the real show of strength. But unfortunately the politicians kept to themselves this time. Of course, the usual suspects of the Delhi fashion scene who are now more or less the "has beens" were present in full force. Surprisingly from Bollywood except for Sanjay Khan's parivaar, there were no big names present.
There were Raveena Tandon, Fardeen Khan and the proud parents of Sonakshi Sinha, actor-turned-politician Shatrughan Sinha and his wife. Sunanda Pushkar Tharoor was present at most fashion shows minus husband, stating that these designers are good friends. It's amazing but how this couple Shashi Tharoor and Sunanda are present everywhere. A real sore sight was spotting the former cricketer Atul Wassan with a black eye. Unfortunately, Atul was a victim of some unruly road rage where some security people of a Haryana minister had bashed him up for overtaking their cars. It was an ugly sight and uglier story that Atul had to narrate to us of his firsthand experience with arrogance of some of the politicians of the Jat land. It's uncalled-for. Where women rule the roost The states where women rule are always very interesting to observe. In Amma's state, one observed that it is only former film star Jayalalithaa who is allowed to wear coloured clothes as a politician. This is very noticeable when at any time you watch Jayalalithaa and her ministers standing together. It is a total contrast and a bit like the cricket team when you see the referee in one colour of clothes and the rest of the team in uniform. Jayalalithaa's ministers too, whether it is a formal or informal occasion, are always dressed in a dress code of white or is it surrender? Jayalalithaa is in a position today to have her way and is safe as most of the opposition former ministers and legislatures are being arrested either for grabbing land when their party was in power or for all different corruption charges. The biggest state in the country Uttar Pradesh meanwhile is gearing up for the elections soon. While political parties are up in arms against one another, it is oddly the women Teen Deviya who are the face of their parties in Uttar Pradesh. The fifty-five-year-old Chief Minister Mayawati, who is ruthless and full of aggression and is not known to have many friends in public or personal life, is the boss. The new entry into Uttar Pradesh politics is Uma Bharti. This fifty-one-year-old has been hijacked from Madhya Pradesh by the BJP to lead the next Assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh. She is known for her temper and is aggressive. Even though she is a 'sanyasin', she enjoys her food and good music. On the other hand, Mayawati is not into food and hates spicy stuff. The Congress has chosen the daughter of their former Chief Minister H.N.Bahuguna to revive the party fortunes in the state. The sixty-one-year-old Rita Bahuguna Joshi is a good fighter and fulfills her duties side by side to being a good housewife too. Loves her classy silk and cotton saris and enjoys her non-vegetarian meal too. These three women, I don't think, have ever even enjoyed a cup of coffee together or interacted with each other, but now they have been put by their parties to fight the coming

A joint where celiacs can indulge themselves New Delhi, August 7 Celiac disease is a condition in which gluten, the protein found in wheat, barley, oats and rye damages the intestines and reduces their ability to absorb food. So, such patients have to strictly keep off gluten to remain healthy. The occasion was cherished as there are very few outlets in which children as well as grown-ups intolerant to wheat can indulge themselves without having to bother about contamination with gluten. Seeing her little girl enjoy the meal, her mother Disha commented, "She is having a pizza after a year. Ever since she was diagnosed with celiac disease last year and put on a gluten-free diet, we did not know of any place that served such food." And her father lovingly offered to take a pizza home whenever their daughter wanted in future. Rashi, who works with Nokia, was equally excited. "I'm a foodie and really miss not having been able to eat so many things for the past over two years when my gluten intolerance was detected. When I got to know of this opportunity, I could not resist it. I will definitely return to Hell Pizza and satisfy my taste buds," she gushed. The waiters and even the brother-sister duo owners of the joint -- Ineet Dua and Jigyasa Dua -- were seen hurrying with trays full of gluten-free delights as many tables got occupied and the waiting period increased. The buffet was the result of an effort by the Celiac Society for Delhi that facilitated the gathering for Hell Pizza. Ishi Khosla, president of the society, nutritionist, and proprietor of WholeFoods that supplies wheat-free stuff, had set up a counter of her products for the convenience of the patients. In between her busy schedule, Jigyasa informed, "Hell Pizza is a chain of New Zealand. Ineet and I have worked there before we started the venture here on January 22. The outlets in New Zealand and the USA have a gluten-free menu. On January 20, a foreign lady, who is a celiac, saw our board and asked if here too we would serve gluten-free versions. We immediately obliged as it was her birthday on January 21 with an order of 10 special pizzas a day before our launch! Ever since, we have wanted to do something for society, especially this group of people. So, we got in touch with Ishi." And it is only when the expert eye of Ishi gave the go-ahead to their gluten-free ingredients and non-contaminated equipment that they began serving celiacs. Happy eating! Hell Pizza offers gluten-free versions of the dishes on its list. |
