Dejected man commits suicide
Ludhiana, August 7
Nearly five months after his son was killed in a fight on account of personal enmity, a man committed suicide by consuming poison yesterday. The victim, identified as Jagdish Chander, consumed some poisonous substance at his office in the railway quarters near Chaura Bazar.

Rain, humidity bring viral fever, cold to city

With the city still midway through the monsoon season, people complaining of high fever, body ache, cold and cough have been thronging the city’s hospitals and clinics. Many patients have reported symptoms of jaundice, typhoid, cholera, malaria and other infectious diseases.

Studying for a BCom or MCom degree at any of the city’s government colleges costs about Rs 3,000 to Rs 4,000 per academic year while for doing the same course from a privately run institution will cost a student about Rs 30,000 per year.

As many as 65 school dropouts have been enrolled at a school being run by an NGO and a trust at BRS Nagar here. Continuing their efforts to bring children begging on roads back to school, the Noble Foundation Trust and the Shri Durga Mata Mandir Trust are running the school in a room on the temple premises.

When health officials come in the way of emergency service

Agitated employees of the National Rural Health Mission stage a protest in the afternoon, which started from Jagraon Bridge and concluded at the Civil Hospital. As the protesting employees passed from Field Ganj, they jammed the traffic and thus became a hurdle for an ambulance (left and bottom left) which too got stuck in the jam. 220 screened at diabetes camp

NIMA organised a diabetes screening camp here today at Shivpuri. Dr Surinder Gupta, secretary, NIMA, Ludhiana district, and managing director of the ‘Diabetes Free World’ said 220 patients were given free services.
