Soil erosion at dhussi bundh comes down
Nakodar, August 22 This has brought respite to the residents as 150 feet of the land had been eroded. The officials said soil erosion has stopped at all vulnerable points. SDO, drainage, Harish Kumar, said owing to the collective efforts of the drainage, revenue and forest officials, the situation has almost been brought under control and soil erosion has reduced. He also lauded the role of 400 PAP jawans who worked day and night to lay down studs at the embankment of dhusi bundh. Officials said though the situation was under control but the officials of the department would keep a 24-hour vigil at the bundh as a precautionary measure. They said, now the water level at Sutlej was at 22,000 cusecs but the water current was still strong and thus chances of more soil erosion remain. XEN, Drainage, Arvinder said, the authorities need to be vigilant till the monsoon season ends by September end. To serve food to the hundreds of labourers engaged at the dhusi bundh, villagers, village panchayats and other social groups have come forward to distribute free food to them. The villagers have urged the government to identify more vulnerable points along the dhussi bundh to prevent such a situation in the future.

Garbage piles up as MC searches for new dumping site
Nawanshahr, August 22 The worst affected roads and localities are Chandigarh Road, Rahon Road, Matharu Ice Factory Road, Ghas Mandi, Lallian Mohalla, Pandora Mohalla and Old Grain Market. As per the available information, there are as many as 200 posts of safai karamcharis in the MC, but the present strength is just 65. As far as dumping site is concerned, the Nagar Council stopped dumping of garbage at Musapur site following public outcry. Few months back, the residents of Musapur Road had blocked the tractor trailers of the MC against dumping of garbage at the site. For some time, the MC dumped garbage near the Sutlej but it had to stop following protest by the residents of nearby villages. Now, the MC has no alternative site. The district administration has reportedly been trying to persuade the panchayats of some villages to provide land for using it as garbage dumping ground. Some residents have suggested that if no alternative site is available for garbage dumping ground, the MC should construct a boundary wall around the present dumping ground situated on Musapur Road and make adequate arrangements to check emanating stink to address the problem being faced by the nearby residents. |
