Admn scraps recruitment of 144 CTU conductors

The UT administration today scrapped the recruitment of 144 bus conductors in the Chandigarh Transport Undertaking (CTU).

Despite the imposition of Section 144 of the IPC in front of the Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s residence in Sector 11, Chandigarh, the UT police failed to stop followers of Anna Hazare from holding a protest at the venue Despite the UT Additional District Magistrate’s prohibitory orders on forming an assembly of five or more persons, taking out processions, making speeches and raising slogans within the 200-metre radius of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s and various leaders’ houses, Anna Hazare supporters managed to stage a protest.

‘Outsiders’ nabbed by cops in DAV College

In a pointer towards the expected scenario in the forthcoming polls to the student council in local colleges, the police virtually dragged six fake students from inside DAV College, Sector 10, to the gate following high drama during the class-hours here today.

Uphill task at Estate Office
Chandigarh, August 23
It seems the authorities at the UT Estate Office in Sector 17 here are indifferent to the plight of senior citizens and physically challenged persons who frequent the building for different jobs.
For the past one month, the lift at the three-storeyed public building is out of order and no official seems to be bothered about the issue. Ironically, the building houses the offices of the UT Deputy Commissioner (DC) Brijendra Singh, Assistant Estate Officer (AEO) Rahul Gupta, Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC) ML Sharma and Land Acquisition Officer (LAO) Tilak Raj. 

‘Lover’ held for minor girl’s murder
Chandigarhj, August 11
The UT Police has arrested a 20-year-old Mohali resident for the murder of a class IX student of Government Model High School in Sector 41. The police arrested Parminder Singh, alias Bablu, a taxi driver, for allegedly kidnapping and murdering Mandeep Kaur (17), a minor. The accused pushed her into the Ropar canal to get rid of her, as she refused to return home and insisted him to marry her, the police said.

Admn seeks MHA clarification

In a development that will further delay the appointment of new UT Home Secretary (HS), the UT administration has sought a clarification from the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) whether to post an officer of the level of Finance Commissioner to the crucial post.

Duronto fares out, at last
Chandigarh, August 23
Finally, fares of the Amritsar-Chandigarh Duronto train are out. To travel from Chandigarh to Amritsar, the fare of the AC chair car is Rs 385. For the non-AC chair car, the fare is Rs 167. In the fare schedule released by the Northern Railway this afternoon, dinner will be served in the AC chair car.

Despite a number of drowning incidents being reported in the past here and yesterday’s incident at Pinjore where 16 persons had a narrow escape after the water level of the Kaushalya rose suddenly, the Panchkula Municipal Corporation (MC) is yet to wake up to a critical requirement of professional divers.

Ashes of unclaimed bodies to be immersed at Kiratpur Sahib
Mohali, August 23
Two officials of the Municipal Corporation will be immersing the ashes of unclaimed bodies, which were cremated over the years at the local cremation ground at Kiratpur Sahib on August 26. As many as 32 bags full of ashes of unclaimed bodies are lying in a store of the Mohali cremation ground over the past many years as the authorities concerned failed to make any arrangement for their immersion.

Finally, civic body moves court against 14 dairy owners
Panchkula, August 23
Waking up from a deep slumber, the Panchkula Municipal Corporation (MC) has finally moved court against 14 persons allegedly responsible for the cattle menace in the city. The MC had served many notices to these dairy owners but to no avail. MC officials claimed that these people after milching the cattle let them off on the city roads to fend for themselves resulting in the stray cattle menace.

Shopkeepers hold Naib Tehsildar hostage
Panchkula, August 23
High drama was witnessed at the Sector 25 market on Tuesday evening when shopkeepers allegedly held hostage a Naib Tehsildar of Panchkula for more than one hour. Shopkeepers were alleging that the Naib Tehsildar was seeking bribe for not issuing challans for using polybags.

Campaigning picks up steam in colleges

Supporters of the Youth Association of India take out a car rally in Sector 10, Chandigarh, on Tuesday. Even though dates to student election bodies are yet to be announced, campaigning has begun to pick up steam in three of the city’s prominent colleges - DAV College in Sector 10, Sri Guru Gobind Singh College (SGGS College) in Sector 26 and GGDSD College in Sector 32 - today. Members of the CSU seek votes for their candidate at SGGS College in Sector 26.

Man kills father with iron rod over argument
Kurali, August 23
Argument between father and son today took an ugly turn, resulting in the 50-year-old, Joga Singh being bludgeoned to death by his own son. The police has registered a murder case and arrested Gurdhyan Singh and his mother Charanjit Kaur who helped her son in the crime.

Gang of vehicle lifters busted, luxury cars recovered
Chandigarh, August 23
The vehicle theft accused in police custody on Tuesday. The UT Police has busted a gang of motor vehicle lifters and recovered luxury cars and SUV’s from their possession. The police had arrested three persons of the gang, identified as Kewal Singh, alias Tillu, a resident of Ludhiana as the kingpin of the gang, Sukhdev Singh and Gurvinder Singh last week.

Another immigration fraud comes to light
Chandigarh, August 23
The UT Police today arrested owner of an immigration company, Overseas Education and Immigration, in a cheating case. The police arrested Sanjiv Prabhakar for duping a Sector-38 resident on false promises of sending him abroad.

One held for land fraud
Chandigarh, August 23
Two persons defrauded a UK-based NRI by attempting to sell his house at Sector 10 while the latter was abroad. The police today booked the two accused. The police arrested Gurinder Singh of Jalandhar for preparing fake documents to sell the house of NRI Chatur Singh Bajwa. The police also booked another NRI, Avinder Singh Kahlon, for arranging fake general power of attorney (GPA) to the accused. Gurinder was remanded to police custody for two days.

Money motive behind murder of 65-year-old woman
Panchkula, August 23
It was the carelessness on the part of owner Praveen Kumar, who instead of keeping huge cash in the bank kept it in his house, which led to the killing of his old mother. Lured by the huge amount of money, accused domestic help Akhilesh had killed 65-year-old Shanti Devi on Saturday night.
