Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, August 23
Five players of the Chandigarh Hockey Academy were declared ‘overage’ by a team of doctors during the ongoing 10th ONGC SN Vohra Memorial Hockey Tournament for Boys (U-14) being held at the hockey stadium in Sector 42 here.

Followed by a proper medical examination, the panel of three doctors, appointed by organisers, declared a total of seven players ‘unfit’, but after the review, two players were allowed to play as they were considered as ‘border cases’ in terms of age.

Interestingly, players are enrolled in the state-run academies only after undergoing a proper medical check-up by a team of doctors from Government Multi Speciality Hospital, Sector 16.But the ouster of players has put a question mark on the credibility of these doctors, who have been working with organisers for the past eight years.

Notably, several lakhs are spent on players in the state-run academies. The players are provided with all facilities, including boarding, education, diet, kits and training, but all effort made by the the Chandigarh Sports Council goes in vain as these players are not allowed to play in the tournaments. “The move directly affects players. The authorities should take a stand and work out some solution to the problem,” said a player while changing his kit after the match.

According to organisers, players Ravi, Mandeep, Sandeep, Nikhil and Sukhwinder were declared ‘overage’. Last year, a total of 21 players of hockey, football and cricket academies were declared ‘overage’ by the authorities itself.

A total of six players of Delhi Hockey Eleven, seven of Mehta Gurukul Hockey Academy, Doraha, six of Bassi Pathana, four of Surjit Hockey Academy, Jalandhar, two of Bombay Hockey Eleven, eight of SBM Public School, Jaipur, three of MRS Hockey Academy, Amritsar, one of Karnataka XI, seven of SPS Hockey Academy, Mohali and four of MP High School, Bhiwani, were declared ‘overage’ by doctors.
