Meandering Sutlej hinders stud-laying work at dhussi bundh
Nakodar August 27 The SDO, drainage, Harish Kumar said that though stud-laying work was going on at a good pace, but the unexpected meandering in Sutlej was still proving a big hurdle in stud-laying work. He said, “On Friday, due to water meandering and strong currents of water, around 50 feet laid stud at dhussi bundh was submerged into the water,”adding that until the soil erosion at dhussi bundh was completely stopped, stud-laying work would continue and it was not possible to fix any timeframe of completion of the ongoing repair work. He further said that soil erosion was a natural phenomenon whenever the water flowed at a low level in the Sutlej adding that erosion would come to an end when the water level in the Sutlej increases. He said drainage officials would keep a strict vigil till the end of the monsoon at the vulnerable points at dhussi bundh. Officials of Drainage Department revealed that now the water level in the Sutlej was around 10,000 cusecs and tomorrow it was expected to touch 50,000 cusecs as water released from Sarsa, Sawah River would enters into Ropar Headworks which would later spread into the Sutlej. He said, “More than one lakh sand bags, 10 tonnes of iron string and 1600 kg of thread rope had been consumed in stud-laying work and further requirements of materials were already sought. Around 400 Punjab Armed Police (PAP) Jawans had been deployed at the dhussi bundh in a hurry when the swollen Sutlej had been eroding hundreds of feet of land inside it.
