Police suspects gang war theory

Tribune News Service

Amritsar, September 3
Even as the gang war that occurred last night in the Ranjit Avenue locality has shaken the residents of the area; the police have yet to register any case in this connection.

The police authorities claimed that though shots were fired but preliminary investigations have raised the suspicion over the incident. The police is wondering whether it was actually a gang war or merely a concocted story to frame the members of the opposite gang.

It is evident to mention here that members of the two notorious gangs - Jagtar Boxer and Ankur Likhari- clashed at Ranjit Avenue, leaving two persons, Aman Mota and Surjit Singh of the Likhari gang injured. They sustained injuries on arms and legs.

“Prime facie, taking circumstantial evidence into account, the matter seemed to be doubtful. We have sought medical reports from doctors under whom they were getting treatment. We have also put some queries before doctors. However, he was yet to file their reports,” said Naresh Kumar, ADCP City-II, while talking to The Tribune. The incident was still under investigation and appropriate action would be taken after completion of the inquiry, he said.

It is relevant to mention here that similar incidents of firing and clash between two rival groups had been reported in the past as well.

In January last year, the members of two rival gangs clashed in the high-security district court premises, resulting in the killing of one member of the Jagtar Boxer gang identified as Raju Chikna. He died on the spot, while a policeman was also injured.

SC panel issues notices to DC and SSP
Tribune News Service

Amritsar, September 3
Taking cognizance of the alleged atrocities on a Dalit woman by officials of the Gharinda police station, the National Commission for SC/ST here today asked the SSP (Rural) to file an affidavit. The victim Amanjot Kaur, a resident of Bhakna village, had alleged that the police had tortured her by giving electric shocks after her in-laws had lodged a false case of theft against her in the Gharinda police station.

The police however, in its inquiry had found the allegations as baseless as the sarpanch of the village had told the police that the victim did not reside in the village and had lodged a false dowry case against her in-laws.

The commission, taking cognisance of the matter, had issued notices to the Deputy Commissioner Rajat Aggarwal and SSP (Rural Police) Gurmeet Chauhan in this connection, besides asking the victim to appear before the commission to present her case. However, the victim and her family failed to appear before Raj Kumar Verka, Vice-Chairman of the commission who held a meeting with the district administration and the police at the Circuit House here today.

Verka, talking to The Tribune, said that they have now asked the victim and her family members to appear and record their statement with the DC or the Sub-divisional Magistrate so that further action could be taken in the case. However, he warned that if they failed to record their statement, action could be taken as per law to malign the image of the police officials concerned.
