Jalandhar, September 4
Despite directions of the Deputy Commissioner-cum-District Election Officer, Priyank Bharti, the model code of conduct for Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) elections scheduled to be held on September 18, continues to be violated. Banners of political parties can be seen on several public as well as private properties. These banners, buntings and hoardings have been erected at several areas around Doaba Chowk and Kacheheri Chowk.

The putting up of these banners carrying photographs of leaders of various political parties does not only violate the model code of conduct but also defies the Defacement Act.

Municipal Corporation, Jalandhar (MCJ), Assistant Commissioner, DP Bhardwaj, said banners of political leaders may have been left behind at some places. He said, “The MCJ had removed banners, hoardings and buntings from most spots but they may have been seen erected at some parts of the city as they are put up again after the MCJ removed them.”

Priyank Bharti had issued directions a few days ago to all the returning officers (ROs) to get the model code of conduct strictly implemented.

Bharti had directed the ROs to constitute flying squads to check the violation of the model code of conduct so that the instructions issued by the Election Commission from time to time can be monitored properly.

DEO had further asked the ROs to ensure that candidates do not violate the code of conduct by putting up hoardings, banners, buntings and other advertisement material at public and private properties. The banners and buntings already put up at public and private properties in violation of the code should be removed immediately, he had said. Bharti also directed the ROs to take appropriate action against those candidates found defying model election code of conduct.

Direct payment to farmers opposed
Our Correspondent

Tarn Taran, September 4
Federation of Aarhti Association in its state body meeting here today has warned the Food Corporation of India (FCI) and other procurement agencies against direct payment against the produce to the farmer. They have also threatened that the federation would boycott the FCI if it tried to do so.

Vijay Kalra, state president of the body, presided over the meeting on Saturday. All district presidents, presidents of various mandis and other office-bearers also attended the meeting.

The Association appreciated the state government for its efforts to ensure payments to the farmers through commission agents and said the Food Corporation of India was trying its best to make payments directly to the farmers for the paddy season.

The Association would condemn the move and boycott the Food Corporation of India against its move.

The Association also demanded that the payment against the procured produce should be done within a period of three days so that the farmers were made the payments soon.

The Association also demanded that the lifting work of produce should be done through the commission agents to address the problem of lifting.
