At RML, battle for life goes on for two blast victims
New Delhi, September 14 The doctors today upped their doses of antibiotics, the sole treatment for such situations, apart from giving the asymptomatic medication for maintaining the vitals. They are concerned because, according to them, in such severe trauma injuries, the risk of infection is very high. With no major improvement in their cases, doctors say apart from the drugs, a strong will and urge to live would pull them through. In morning, as Ram Lal's health showed signs of deterioration, fresh samples from the affected parts were sent for culture sensitivity. However, doctors have already put him on a higher dose of antibiotics. "They have not responded well to the medicines. After three days of an injury, the growth of bacteria begins. And by the sixth or seventh day, the body stops fighting with the foreign microbes and the patient tends to slip into a shock, leading to septicemia. Both the patients are already in the preliminary stage of shock and are very critical. They had high fever today," said Dr Mridula Pawar, head of the anaesthesia department at RML. We fear more for Mridul, who received injuries all over his bodies, as his lungs and heart are also affected. According to intensive care specialists, things get out of hands when three organs get infected, as this increases the risk of multiple organ failure. "Mridul, who sustained multiple injuries in the head, chest, right arm, left leg and abdomen, is worse. He is being given drugs for improving the heart functions. In his case, cardiac problems are on the severe side. Ram Lal is also critical, but is better than Mridul. Both are on artificial respiration system. The risk of infection goes up as the injuries become old and the patient move towards multiple organ failure," said Dr Pawar. According to experts, interaction is a must for the victims, especially those under trauma, to regain the lost spirit. For this, patients and their families are being counselled daily by a team of the hospital comprising psychiatrists and psychologists. "They talk to the injured and their families. It is more important for those who have undergone amputation. It is obvious for patients such as Ratan Lal to loose confidence. Many times, patients recover due to the will to live," stresses Dr Pawar, referring from her past experiences. As Ratan Lal's condition deteriorated, even after undergoing amputation above the knee on the already amputated leg yesterday, the family sounded worried. His son Deepak said, "Dad is worried, but still has confidence. He looked aggressive when doctors asked him to write something. Though he couldn't hold the pen, the expressions on his face conveyed his resolve to fight back. We are sure he will recover and look after the family as he used to earlier." |
Few takers for shuttle from India Gate parking to HC
New Delhi, September 14 According to a bus driver employed for the service, there had been very few takers of the shuttles. "The highest number of passengers that we have ferried in one trip till now is four. We shuttle passengers between the India Gate parking lot and the high court. Each ticket costs Rs 5. Every day, we cover 100 km in 20 trips. But we have to wait for passengers for a long time as people are rarely using the service," he said. He also said that six DTC buses had been assigned for the service. The parking lot at the India Gate had been opened for lawyers and the litigants, as now, only the lawyers whose vehicles have the latest sticker of the high court are allowed to park them inside the complex. "The parking lot on the premises of the court is only for lawyers. Only the vehicles which bear stickers of the Delhi High Court Bar Association and the Delhi police will be allowed to be parked there. The Delhi police puts the sticker on the vehicles after checking them at the two entry points. Today, the sticker was of orange colour, but the colour will be changed every day," said DK Sharma, secretary of the Delhi High Court Bar Association. The other parking lots for lawyers are at India Gate and Zakir Hussain Road, according to Sharma. However, Kirti Uppal, vice-president of the Delhi High Court Bar Association said there were parking lots at Tilak Marg and Kasturba Gandhi Marg also. According to the parking scheme, there is a parking lot for litigants at Bhairon Marg. Lawyers and litigants, meanwhile, didn't seem happy with the new parking scheme. Anjana Prabhakar, an advocate at the HC, said she has been unable to park her car on the premises of the law complex due to the new parking scheme. "Advocates start coming to the court from 9 am. The parking lot gets full very soon. Many times, I have to park my car at the Patiala House Courts complex since I work there also. Sometimes, my driver drops me outside the high court," she said. Prabhakar also said that she did not use the shuttle service. "To travel between the Patiala House Courts and the high court, I use autorickshaw," she said. Sanjay Chadda, a litigant at the HC, said he was also posed with similar problems. "Earlier, litigants could park their vehicles near the high court. But, due to the new parking scheme, one has to park either at the India Gate or Bhairon Marg. I then have to walk to the court or use the shuttle. I am an old man and this new scheme will probably kill me," he said. |
Security still an issue in DU labs
New Delhi, September 14 The officers were appointed and all unused sources were safely disposed of. However, these officers were nowhere to be seen over the past few months. Senior science teachers and faculty members said during practicals for MSc, it was usually the regular laboratory staff that was present most of the time. No new security measures had been introduced for the safety of the teachers and students conducting experiments in the lab as well, sources in chemistry department said. However, one year back, the board had handed over an array of measures to be undertaken by the university. Most of them are still in process, HoD of science said. The university had also introduced a training programme for teachers working with radioactive substances, but it had also died down. Now with the matter afresh again, all the safety polices were on a revival. "Those officers who were appointed are redundant now. Now they have nothing much to do. With the chargesheet against teachers now coming to fore, strictness has increased all over again. But as soon as the matter dies off, the labs go back to its usual careless trends," said a senior physics teacher at the university. Meanwhile, it's the students' loss. They have to conduct the experiments outside of the university. There are close to 300 students in MSc I year who have a compulsory paper on nuclear physics that requires them to conduct practicals with radioactive substances. In another department, MTech (nuclear technology) 300 to 400 students have also been badly hit. Both the departments have been conducting most practicals outside the university. "The entire course gets affected. Ninety per cent of the time, the radioactive substances required in reactions are harmless. Thankfully the mild sources can now be used. We still have to resort to alternative methods to conduct experiments outside the university at times, but the quality suffers. The university and the teachers need to be more vigil. This is a fact that, these substances in many labs are unused for the years, hence the security lapses occur," said one of the professors teaching the nuclear physics module in MTech. The Delhi police had recently filed a chargesheet in a city court against six DU professors in the 2010 Mayapuri radiation case for endangering lives by auctioning a radioactive gamma irradiator without following mandatory precautions. The chargesheet includes the then head of chemistry department, VS Parmar, and the then dean of sciences, Roop Lal, along with Rakesh Kumar, Ramesh Chandra Rastogi, Ashok Prasad and Rita Kakkar under various penal provisions dealing with causing death by rash and negligent acts and causing grievous harm. The court is likely to take cognisance of the probe report on September 21. In April 2010, the university had sold off radioactive waste to a scrap dealer without proper procedure, which caused death of a person and left seven people critically injured. They were exposed to radiation when they cut open a cobalt-60 irradiator at the Mayapuri scrap market. |
1 held for cheating woman of Rs 2.5L on the pretext of marriage
New Delhi, September 14 They became familiar through a website shaadi.com," said Chhaya Sharma, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP), south district. During the interrogation, Ahmed, also an electronic communication engineer said he became acquainted with the complainant over Shaadi.com. He called her to Bhopal and developed a physical relationship with her on the pretext of marrying her. The complainant alleged that he came to Delhi, took her ATM card and withdrew the money. "He refused to marry her and then went to Hyderabad. He also changed his official address," said the DCP. The complainant only knew the name of the accused and did not have his photograph and residential address. The police tracked the address on which the mobile phone was registered. However, occupants of the residence claimed that they had never heard of Ahmed. "We obtained Ahmed's bank account number and photographs pasted on an application form. Address mentioned on the form was also fake. The police searched details of the accused in the regional passport office, road transport authorities, voter list but no matches were found. We noticed an advertisement of Gold Cup T-20 Cricket Matches to be held in six cities in south India. The telephone number given in the advertisement matched the previously owned number of Ahmed," the DCP added. A person impersonated as a manager of three local cricket teams and wanted to participate in the tournament, contacted at the given number. Ahmed agreed to meet him and was arrested in Hyderabad on September 10. |

With e-services, get certificates in 7 days
New Delhi, September 14 Six major services - issuance of birth and death certificates, health trade licence, park booking, community hall booking, general trade licence and factory licence - have been brought under the e-SLA with an intent to empower the citizens of Delhi. Prof Rajni Abbi said the new service would be popularised through signboards, kiosks, advertisements, etc. "This will be done to ensure that the citizens take part in the e-governance process. It will be made sure that they use computers, kiosks and other facilities for the services. We will ensure that there is transparency, accountability and effectiveness in the delivery of civic services," she said. With the implementation of the e-SLA, the Mayor said if the service was not provided within the specified time frame, the applicant was entitled to seek a compensatory cost for delay at the rate of Rs 10 per day, subject to a maximum of Rs 200. She said strict action would be taken against defaulting officials. The MCD would launch disciplinary proceedings against those found to be habitually defaulting or failing in delivery of service that may include his dismissal. The e-SLA has been implemented in the MCD under The Delhi (Right of Citizen to Time Bound Delivery of Services) Act, 2011. |

The explosion that took place outside Gate No.5 of the Delhi High Court complex last Wednesday killed 13 people and injured over 90. The probe is being headed by the National Investigation Agency (NIA), assisted by the Delhi police.
