DUSU POLLS
New Delhi, September 10 NSUI's Ajay Chikara won the post of president with a total of 11,164 votes against Neha Singh of ABVP who received a total of 8,807 votes. Chikara defeated Neha by a margin of 2,357 votes. ABVP's Vikas Chowdhary won the post of vice-president with 11,855 votes against NSUI's Bhupendera Choudhary who got 8,075 votes. The AVBP also bagged the post of secretary with Vikas Yadav winning with 8,368 votes against NSUI's Parag Sharma with 6,014 votes. ABVP's Deepak Bansal grabbed the post of joint secretary by defeating NSUI's Ashish Choudhary with a total of 8,404 votes. Ashish received 6,299 votes. The ABVP's victory today was a rider of the anti-Congress sentiments in students who were angry with the way the party handled the situation in the Anna Hazare agitation. The ABVP had been actively involved in the Anna campaign and had made every effort in the book to ensure maximum visibility on the campus. The campaigning of the NSUI more so, focused on core student issues but still fell short of achieving the depth that the ABVP achieved during the Anna campaign. But still, the NSUI managed to grab the presidential post. The counting began at 9 am today. Occasional slogan wars between the ABVP and the NSUI turned out to be quite an entertainer for mediapersons and security staff on duty. During the counting, ABVP's last year DUSU panel member Priya Dabbas came out and indicated that the ABVP might wins with a clean sweep on all four seats. Soon the crowd broke in frenzy with the ABVP supporters breaking the police barricades almost 500 mtr away from the office of Dean of Study Welfare and rushing towards the main DU office building. The NSUI camp was visibly disturbed and started calling their supporters inside for confirmation. As the result came out, both the camps broke into frenzy, while the ABVP was celebrating their win over three out of four DUSU seats, the NSUI rejoicing its win over president's post. Only 32 per cent of voting was registered yesterday in the much-anticipated elections. "Had the rains not affected the number yesterday, the ABVP would have won with a higher margin. We lost the presidential seat during the last few minutes. We are sure that there has been some discrepancy. We will file an RTI and a formal complaint. We were very sure of our win, but still I am happy that the ABVP has won the three seats," said ABVP's presidential candidate Neha Singh. Even last year, the ABVP had won three of the top posts of DUSU, including that of the president, in the elections whose campaign was focused on the alleged corruption in the Commonwealth Games. |
NSUI pins loss on Anna’s stir
New Delhi, September 10 "I think the issue of corruption and scams has worked against us and the results are a proof of it. I am saddened by the loss," NSUI's Bhupendra Chaudhary who was contesting for the vice-president’s post said. Chaudhary lost to ABVP’s Vikas Choudhary by a margin of 3,780 votes. "The corruption charges and the Anna Hazare agitation definitely had a negative impact on us," added Chaudhary. However, NSUI’s lone winning candidate Ajay Chhikara, new president, disagreed with his comrade and insisted that corruption and Hazare were non-issues. "If corruption and Anna Hazare were important, I would have lost too," Chhikara said. — IANS |
Hope fades for three blast victims
New Delhi, September 10 "Both his legs have been amputated after the blast and he was put on ventilator after his condition deteriorated yesterday. Due to infection he is being operated again. According to doctors, it is difficult to say anything," said Ratan Lal's 22-year-old son Deepak Saraf, who rushed to the hospital from Kaithal in Haryana where he is pursuing engineering. As he spoke, standing outside the operation theatre of RML trauma centre's fifth floor, the fear of losing his father is writ large on his face. "It has been traumatic. When I met him he said it was just a matter of two-three days. You shouldn't have come. He was still concerned about my studies," narrated Deepak after a painful pause. Following amputation, Ratan Lal fresh bandaged wounds showed no signs of healing and instead infection caused due to the toxic presence of shrapnels and foreign bodies had started spreading to the upper part of his body. While he was freshly debrided in a two-hour surgery during which shrapnels were removed along with necrotic tissues, some nails and pellets are still embedded in his back. Doctors are unable to perform an operation due to his fluctuating BP. "While dead tissues were removed today again, his back remains to be in pain due to nails. But doctors say surgery can be done only when his BP normalises. He has been on ventilator as his lungs have been affected due to infection," said Deepak, who was in the hospital accompanied by his sister and friends. Like Ratan Lal, two other patients are also in ICU and are being constantly monitored. The family members of Mridul, Harish and Tarsem remained stationed at the hospital after three days of the explosion. As per the last received update, all the three patients continue to be critical while a total of 23 victims of the Wednesday blast are undergoing treatment at its wards. The condition of three other patients admitted to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences' Trauma Centre is stable. They are responding well to the treatment, said Dr M C Misra, the medical superintendent of AIIMS Trauma
Centre. |

Unsung heroes of RML Hospital
New Delhi, September 10 They are the cleaners and porters of Sulabh International -- a non-government organisation that has deploys 460 such people in shifts at RML. They were instrumental in bringing bloodied victims to speedy medical attention and ensuring hygiene in the post-trauma care. "We got a call from the police and scores of patients came in after 10.30 am," said Sulabh International adviser Neeraj Kumar Singh. "The ambulances stretched up to Mandir Marg and porters were deployed to bring in victims to the trauma centre." Thirteen people were killed and 95 injured when an explosives-rigged briefcase blew up at Gate 5 of the Delhi High Court complex during the morning peak hours. RML is close to the blast site and many of the victims were rushed there. These cleaners and porters, hired by the hospital in 2003, are working round the clock to maintain hygiene and cleanliness in the emergency wards of the hospital, where the blast survivors have been admitted. "There is no special training that we receive," trauma centre cleaner Rajesh said. "But we have to be strong and determined to attend to such cases of mass casualties," he added. The teen said he remained calm as mangled and mutilated bodies were brought. "Some of them had their limbs hanging, some were bleeding profusely. They needed immediate care without further trauma -- that is all we knew," Rajesh said. Special hygiene had to be maintained for the grievously injured patients as the chances of infection seeping through their wounds were high. "Open wounds, heavy bleeding and the presence of nails increase infection risk in emergency wards," another worker, Mukesh, said. "We have learnt over the years how to take care in such situations." He has no memory of how many patients they carried that day. "Things just happened and there was no time to stop and think about what we were doing," he said. Clad in blue-and-orange uniforms, these workers' first task was to pool in stretchers at the trauma centre and disaster ward. A team of 22 supervisors coordinated this step in trauma
management. — IANS |

Hoteliers asked to install CCTV cameras
New Delhi, September 10 "They have also been requested to install CCTV cameras in their public areas such as parking lots and lobbies," said Bhagat. A source said the police will conduct a survey of all the courts in Delhi. It will also ensure the installation of CCTV cameras around the courts. It will identify the places around the High Court where the CCTV cameras will be installed by Electronics Cooperation of India Limited (ECIL). "ECIL has promised Chief Justice of the Delhi High Dipak Misra that it will complete its survey in two days. The survey includes an estimated cost of the cables for the CCTV cameras and the area that will be covered," said Ramesh Gupta, senior executive member of the Delhi High Court Bar Association. |
Special Cell: Time to retrieve lost luster
There was a time when being associated with Special Cell, the anti-terrorist squad of Delhi police, was a matter of pride for any official and Karnal Singh, Joint Commissioner of Special Cell used to be the face of Delhi police. This was not too long ago. However, in the last one and a half years, the cell has not only been reduced to arresting drug-peddling Nigerians and chain snatchers but also earned itself sobriquets like "Sleeping Cell" or "Slipping Cell". The cell is till today struggling to solve the Jama Masjid shootout case and, according to sources, has reached a dead-end on every lead it was following. No wonder, after the High Court bomb blast on Wednesday, the case was shifted to the National Investigation Agency (NIA) within an hour. However, the cell has a chance to redeem itself now that the Delhi police commissioner has formed three special teams, all to be led by present and former ACPs of Special Cell with vast experience in counter-terrorism, to work on the case. Any success in the investigation could do wonders to the sinking morale of the cell.
Docs have their share of stress
As Delhi recovered from Wednesday's explosion at the High Court, the doctors at Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital, which received the maximum number of victims, had their own share of stress and challenge after patients were rushed to its trauma centre. Since Wednesday morning around 10:30 am when patients started pouring into the hospital, the hospital's staff, both the doctors and paramedics, had a taxing time in attending to the patients. However, some relatives seemed to be miffed with the hospital's medical and security staff alleging that they were not allowed to even see their near and dear ones while the VVIPs were being given the preferential treatment. Princely pay
The new academic session at Delhi Technological University (DTU) has barely started, but eager companies are already heading to the institute for placements. In August, some 18 companies visited DTU for campus placements and offered jobs to nearly 130 students. Companies are continuing to visit the campus and the job offers are only growing in number for graduate students. The highest salary that has been offered so far is Rs 10.5 lakh per annum and the offer has been made to four students by a reputed MNC. The average salary on offer has been about Rs 6 lakh per annum, slightly better than last year's average of Rs 5.5 lakh per annum. The maximum number of students (about 35) has been recruited by Deloitte. About 10 more companies have registered themselves to visit DTU for placements in September. Unmanned aircraft developed by DTU students
New Delhi, September 10 A 10-member inter-disciplinary team from DTU headed by Gaurav Gupta of the final year mechanical engineering developed the unmanned aircraft system (UAS). Students in the team were drawn from computer and electrical engineering, physics and automobile engineering. Gaurav Gupta gives the details about the aircraft system, "We designed and developed the unmanned aircraft system. A ten-member team worked on this special project. The UAS comprises a fixed wing aircraft of approximately 12 ft span weighing 36 kg." Gaurav adds, "The aircraft is equipped with sensing, imaging and surveillance capabilities and can fly up to 20,000 ft with a payload of 17 kg. The prototype will test fly in November this year." The entire project is the result of an industry-academia collaboration between DTU and Lockheed Martin. Students at DTU have also worked on a number of innovations in robotics, software and hardware development, design of manual and solar-powered transport vehicles. The robotics research at the varsity is most ambitious to date. "Students have developed robots that are digitally operated and mechanically controlled. These robots have been displayed in various contests. The students have also developed a range of software and hardware projects," said Dr Vivek Tripathi, spokesperson at DTU. The university has created many innovations like hybrid car, unmanned aerial vehicle, automatic vending machine, all-terrain vehicle and Robotic Shera to mention a few. |

Students visit Formula One site in Gt Noida
Gt Noida, September 10 "Motor sport is liked by the majority of students as it provides thrill. I have planned to join the academy to be set up next year at Buddh International Circuit where Formula One is scheduled to be held," said Vivek Sharma, a student. "Preparations are going on in full swing. As the development is being done by a private company, infrastructure would be developed on time. Not only the company's but the country's prestige is also at stake," said Shashi Sharma, a professor and resident of sector Alpha. "As over one lakh visitors are expected during the event, authorities should take measures for accommodation. As the city lacks enough hotels, bread & breakfast units should be registered in large numbers. This will provide cheap accommodation to visitors," said Ramesh Negi, a resident of Greater Noida. |
