Following surveys conducted by the Income Tax (I-T) Department on business premises of two
Patiala-based jewellers, Jamuna Jewellers and Prem Jewellers, the latter made a voluntary surrender of undisclosed income to the tune of Rs 4.3
crore.

Amenities missing from mc’s dictionary

Potholed roads, non-functional streetlights, ill-maintained parks, encroachments in corridors of markets and thefts, especially in houses situated along the Zirakpur- Kalka highway, irk the residents of Sector 2. Residents have taken up their problems with the authorities concerned time and again, but nothing has been done so far, said Major (retd) KC Verma, general secretary, Residents Welfare and Environment Society, Sector 2.

PU alumnus arrested for bike thefts

The crime branch of the Chandigarh Police has arrested Jaswinder Singh (25), alias Pinda, a former MSc student of Panjab University, for his involvement in at least eight cases of bike thefts in the city.

Abandoned bag triggers panic

Panic gripped the Shastri Market in Sector 22 here this afternoon when a bag was found abandoned near a shop. An alert passerby called the police control room and a bomb disposal squad was pressed into service. However, the bag owner returned soon after and identified the bag as his.
SGPC Poll: Mudslinging keeps candidates preoccupied

The fight between Akali Dal candidate JP Singh and independent candidate Hardeep Singh, a former SGPC member, today took a new turn with the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) writing to the Gurdwara Election Commission seeking directions to newspapers not to publish any doctored photograph of JP Singh, allegedly created by rival candidate Hardeep Singh.

100 examined at eye camp
As a part of celebrations of Senior Citizens’ month, Sai Tara Ummat Foundation and Senior Citizens’ Welfare Association, Chandigarh, organised a free eye check-up camp in collaboration with Grewal Eye Institute, Sector 9, Chandigarh, today at Old Age Home in Sector 15. Around 100 patients were examined during the camp.

After the Controller of Examination and Registrar, it is now the post of Panjab University Dean Colleges Development Council which has hit troubled waters. Close to the heels of geology department’s chairperson urging acting DCDC Naval Kishore to withdraw his application for the post, the Affiliated Colleges Association has asked PU Vice-Chancellor RC Sobti to appoint a college principal as Dean (colleges) rather than any university official or professor.
